I have a chance to pick up a couple Ruger 9E at a very good price - the deal is they're the MA version - does this mean it's just a stunted magazine or have other 'stuff'  ( esp trigger foolishness ) been done to them?

Not exactly true. It is one way to meet the AG Regs, but they allow other options such as the requirement to have 2 or more processes before a gun can fire substitutes for the horrendous trigger pull option . . . that is the way 1911s qualify with very light triggers.

So the 10# requirement is only for double-action handguns?  Interesting.
