I'll put this up front. I'm living the retired NG dream. Free health care that in 5 years will save me over $90,000 at the current cost of insurance and I get $1200 a month in retired pay. Do the math, that's $150,00 in pay and benefits between the age of 60 and 65. I did have to give 24 years of service with 5 years on active duty. I also earned some crew wings and over 1000 hours of flight time. Plus, some life long friends. Some of whom I will be visiting with next week in Colorado Springs. One of whom I have not seen since 1976 but we have sporadically kept in contact with each other since.
Very few civilian jobs can give you those benefits and those memories. Also keep in mind, I barely missed active duty in Viet Nam but the war I was fighting; the Cold War, our politicians let us win.
