So I'm relatively new here but I'm curious what the local laws are about transporting firearms in your vehicle?

In CA I had a printout of the DEpartment of Justices webpage (and I had the link permanently saved on my phone) explaining everything in case any LEOs who might pull me over were unfamiliar with the laws.  I was always in compliance and made sure I could prove it.

I'm not finding an equivalent here.  anybody have useful info for me or even better links?

Start by checking out the following URL:  www.handgunlaw.us/states/utah.pdf

Page 10 talks specifically about vehicles.

I don't live in Utah, so this is the limit of my knowledge on the subject.  Hopefully a Utah resident will add more detail.

If you are 18 or older you can have a loaded concealed or unconcealed handgun in your vehicle without a permit.

Rifles and shotguns can have loaded mags but no chambered rounds.

Utah HB 357 76-10-504 I think it is.

A permit like a CCW or something specific to long guns?

A Utah CFP. Sorry I should have been more concise.

No.  Loaded handguns only, even when hunting rifles have to be empty.

Edit:
Empty as in no round in chamber and the bolt forward.  You can have a full mag in.

I was wrong. Loaded long guns or handguns are allowed with a Utah CFP. That means, rifles, shotguns, etc.

The rules specifically state pistols only.  You cannot have a round in chamber in a long gun in a vehicle, the mag may be loaded though.

Nope, not true. Call up BCI and ask them if you don't believe me. Utah CFP is an exemption for Utah Code 76-10-5-505.

I'm going to have to look that up.  When did that rule change happen?  Last time I had to renew rifles where still a no go.
