My Taurus PT111 Mil Pro is a POS. I'm going to destroy it I'll be looking for another (better built) handgun.

Kahr is out of it.. Just can't get comfortable with it.
1911 Compacts are way out of my price range. (But I would love one, and not sure about open hammer)
Never going to own a Taurus agian.

My price range is tops $500

What should I look for?

A high yield savings account and some time......

I would think if you were patient, a used g26 or 27 could be had. Make sure you get some trigger-time with whatever you intend on getting BEFORE you puchase one....of course, you probably figured that out with the Taurus....

Ahh the force is strong with this one.....come and join us on the Glock side!
Link Posted: 1/9/2006 10:39:27 PM EDT
I was gonna reccomend a G21, but he probably couldn't get his itty-bitty hands around it........

Remember that the XD is rather thick as a double stack mag. 1911/FN Hi-Powers, etc. may be more concealable on you.

If you think you can carry it go for something similar.

I personally don't do as well with glocks. I ended up picking up a P2000SK for me.

Walther P99 Compacts are out there for $370-$430
Glock 19 and 23s can be had for $350-$500
USP Compacts are about $600
P2000s and P2000SKs are $650-$670
XD 9/40 subcompacts are around $450-$500

Then...do you want night sights, holster, etc.?

Ooh.. I didn't know the P99 came in a compact. I'll have to go look at one. Thanks for the heads up on that.

Edit: Heck a P99 might work just as well.

Rotor Demon,
I have a P99 in .40. If you want to meet up sometime and try it out let me know. I am thinking of trading it out for a long slide Glock, but haven't made up my mind yet. I must say that my P99 is one of the most accurate carry type pistols I have owned. One of the cool things about them is they come with 3 different backstraps so you can swap in the one that fits you best. The down side is that the trigger takes a while to get used to.

If you do decide to get one, I suggest you don't get the Smith and Wesson version as they have been know to have some issues.............. so I hear.

Nox

Rotor Head over to PSTC on 82nd just north of the 224. take about 50 bux with you and shoot everything you can..

15 for the range
6 to rent everything
and the rest for ammo and targets.

you also might want to have a look at the slim line glock.. its a compact/sub compact single stack glock in 45 ACP i dont think PSTC has one though but they look like they would do the trick for you..

and BTW you can get into a Compact 1911 for 500. S/A GI Compact they have them in 4" and i think even 3" .

if you have anyquestions shoot me an IM.

I'm a Glock guy but also take a look at a used Sig 229 -- very ergonomic for small hands. And a SWEET trigger compared to the Glock IMHO. Mrs Hartmann may be switching to that in the future.

G26 may fit the bill if you get it used. If we meet up at a shoot I can bring my G27 for you to try out & see if you like it - I think it's the same frame as the 26. gunbroker.com shows a used G26 for $479 and a used 229s for $425 which pushes the budget w/shipping, xfer fees etc but still within the range, so I think your budget is reasonable.

edited to correct Sig models & price

Glock 26 and 27 can be had in the Portland area for $500. Check around. Also, the XD runs about $450/460ish. Hold both and others to make sure the fit is there.

If I make it to the shoot I can bring my USP compact 9mm and Walther P99. I will also try to bring my Kimber pro-carry. Pro-carry is a 1911 with a full size frame and shorter barrel... roughly commander size. They can be found for reasonable prices if you shop around ($670 new - $550 or so used). They are not as fancy as a CDP or Ultra carry, etc. but work fine.

USP and P99 triggers both seem slightly gritty when new but both smooth out after time. My P99 trigger is much nicer than my USP trigger right now but I have a thousand rounds or so through it and many more times dry firing. The USP I picked up used but it was supposed to have only 9 rounds through it. I have had USP's previously and know that it will get much better after some rounds and dry firing.

There are many choices out there. Most of us won't mind sharing either so either go to the shoot or let's meet up at some range. (I should say 'try' since I'm slightly unreliable)

I like my P239.
Link Posted: 1/10/2006 5:52:24 PM EDT
I'll also bring my P2000SK. It's not for everyone, but I shoot it as well (and even a bit better) than my full-size USP.

I've been carrying a Glock 19 for over 15 years. Glocks are great carry guns!

My $0.02 worth,

Mark

I currently have in my possession P239 9MM, P226 9MM, P226 Tactical 9MM, and a P220. I just wish I could get the Sig 552.

I have a P239 .40 and P226 .40. Looking to get a P220R. I need a .45

I don't have anything against Glocks, they just don't feel right to me.

Well the two best for the money and availability would be the Glock and the XD. I have small hands and I shoot a XD 40. The grip seems custom made for smaller hands. and the dang thing shoots like a dream. Don't over look this one. When I got mine I compared the Glock and the XD side by side. I got the XD and never regretted it. 3K rounds through it even Wolf :-( and has never jammed. And it's very accurate for a service weapon.

Download the new CDNN catalog: they are about giving away Walther P-99s. One is $299!!

Cheers
Link Posted: 1/11/2006 7:28:53 PM EDT
I gave Kahr another shot.. PM40, the larger one not the compact. Seems to fit better in my hands. Though I just can't get used to a single stack compared to my fat double stack Tortoise.

299!? For a P99? Nuts! I might have to get one for a plinker.
Link Posted: 1/11/2006 7:39:05 PM EDT
I think the ones for $299 might be the DA only ones. FYI.

So in other words, Long gritty trigger pull?

The new ones are "constant pull"? Internal hammer?
Link Posted: 1/11/2006 8:45:37 PM EDT
All are internal hammer. All P99s have gritty triggers for the first 500 or so rounds.

If you show up at the shoot, you can shoot my P99-AS if you like. I still may be trading it out for a Glock or XD in the near future.

I'll look for the link that shows the pull weights and distance for the different triggers.

5'7" 155

And Nox. I'd like to give your P99 a try.

I'm 5'7, 150 lbs and I've found the HK P2000 and Sig p229 to be very comfortable in my hands. The P2000 also has several backstraps that you can swap out for the best fit. I haven't carried either of them yet as I am waiting on a couple holsters.

NoAim, is your P2000SK trigger the LEM or V3?

Get a glock 19. small enough to carry, but not one of those itty bitty sub compacts.

all kinds of after market crap, any holster you want, easy to repair, shoot straight out of the box with no modifications. There are a lot of nice guns out there, but you specifically want a carry piece. get the glock.

Keith's had smoking deals on Glock 19s. Police trade-ins from Port of Portland.

See the thread on the store being bi-polar... but a deal is a deal.
