i found a great source for pelican 1550 cases which are the perfect size for a few pistols or an SBR.  so i ordered some foam and newgunner came over and we cut it to fit.  next is to make paper cut outs of gun and then cut them out too!

it will be the perfect size for a SBR. couple uppers, cans to match, and a few mags thrown in too.

had to order about $18 worth of foam per case.  that includes a 1" bottom, 2" for the lower level cut outs, anothe 1" bottom, and another 2" layer for the top cut outs.  1.5" egg crate top too.

whatcha think?

UPDATE:

wanna play name that gun?  or can you think of a better layout?

UPDATE 2:

got a little further before I had to leave.  whatcha think?

PS: ignore the folded in side by the mags.  the foam wasn't pushed all the way into the box.

update 3:
finished the first layer.  turned out pretty good.  if I were to do it again I wouldn't get 2" foam,  way to thick. although they are very well protected!!!

should have tucked the foam in better on the edges.

update 4:
added another layer.  finally got time to work on it again:

three are 3 mags there.

Georgia case company in lawrenceville is THE BEST by far.
They can custom cut and have better foam than pelican sells for same amount of $$$.

Here is the one they made for me,

Impressive work and I'm even more impressed to learn there is enough demand to keep a company that cuts foam and I assume sells speciality cases in business.

Here is a good thread on making your own device for cutting foam.

Haven't tried it, but I hear it works great.

Now that I've had Georgia Case Co cut some cases for me, I'll never do it myself again.  Like the man said, the foam they sell is outstanding stuff, as well.

How much did they charge for the foam cutting?
Did you provide the case?
What was their turn on it?

I wanna say that the foam and the cutting together was around $85 or so.

Yikes!  $18 per case of foam and $1.59 for a spool of picture hanging wire hooked up to a rechargeable drill battery!

Fair price considering there foam is 10 times better that pelicans and they cut it to fit properly.
They charged me the same and glad I did it instead of trying to cut my own out of that crappy stuff pelican sends with the case.

What was the timeframe to get this done?  I just purchased a Pelican case today.

I dropped my case off and picked it back up a couple of hours later.  Call first, though.

I figure $85 to be pretty cheap, when you consider I have over $4000 of SWS in that case that I'm trying to protect.

So when you drop it off, are you leaving your gear inside or have you already done the outlines for what you want cut?

I also though $85.00 sounded pricey but I'm a cheap bastard by nature.

I left my stuff with them.  I know a lot of folks that trust 'em and have been doing that for years, so I trusted 'em with it.  If I were doing Class III stuff, then I would stay there with it while they were doing it.

When I took my brother over there to have his case done, we hung around and watched 'em do all the fitting and cutting.  Very interesting to watch and the guys in the shop didn't mind.

I don't a see a 1550 model listed on Pelican's website but yours looks like the exact size I need.

I'm guessing it's a bad idea to store firearms in a Pelican case for extended periods of time because the foam absorbs moisture?

aren't they water/air tight? I assume a pack of silca gel would work fine in one of those for months and months.

The dessicant packs are necessary in that type of open-cell foam.  It's not the case, it's the foam.  It absorbs moister from the air, then condenses it on the cool metal of the firearms inside.  If you use the closed-cell type like the case pictured above that went to GA Case Co., you don't have that same problem.

Hey Shep, did you just take the factory foam out and have them replace it with their Uber-Foam?

Yep.  Bought the foam from GA Case and had 'em cut it.

oh yeah wait, I didn't email him I gave you my email to give to him and I never got an email from him.  Looks like his email is on a spam list or something if he emailed 6 people and no on responded.

Yeah I did. That's the foam and the cutting. I told him I'd heard $85 and he said the foam alone costs that.

I might have paid more than $85, but it was nowhere near $285!  You can buy the case alone for about $185.
