Do any of you guys remember this jewelry store that got robbed in 2003? They are over by the Mall of Georgia. I was talking to my friend Bruce the other night about the story. Bruce is a Gwinnett cop who sometimes works at Guven’s as security and knows the Guvens quite well.
Back in 2003 some bad guys thought they could pull one over on Mr. Guven. They grabbed some merchandise and headed for the door. Mr. Guven gave chase and shot out a couple tires on the getaway vehicle. Gwinnett county cops found the bad guys stranded about a mile from the store with two flat tires.
Another incident occurred just a couple weeks ago. A guy grabbed some jewelry that Mr. Guven’s son, Chris, was showing to the bad guy. Chris chases the guy to his waiting getaway car (there was another perp already at the wheel) and starts beating on the passenger side window. Chris breaks the window with his fist and, luckily, only suffers very minor cuts to his forearm. Again, Gwinnett county rolls quickly and busts the two bad guys just down the street.
It turns out the bad guys from both incidents were already wanted for other crimes. All the bad guys are in the pokey.
Mrs. BookHound and I paid the store a visit last night on Bruce’s recommendation and because we wanted to meet the people who are not afraid to protect their property. We were looking for a new watch for the Mrs. for Christmas. I can’t tell you how well the Guven’s treated us. And when we mentioned Bruce suggested we visit the store, things only got better.
We ended up getting a hell of a deal on a couple new watches and a cocktail ring for Mrs. Hound. We spent a lot of time talking to the Guven’s. It’s a family owned and operated business. While Chris was helping us I asked him about the “tire shooting” incident. Chris told us exactly what happened but then told us of another more recent encounter where Mr. Guven shot the car of another fleeing robber.
It turns out all the Guvens are extremely nice folks. They are from Turkey, but fled that country. You see, the Guvens are Christians and in Turkey the population is 99%+ muslim – and the muslims there aren’t very friendly towards Christians. They are also very conservative in their views. I know the whole Christian and conservative thing doesn’t mean a lot to some of you, but it does mean something to us. And I also found out Mr. Guven very much likes guns and is not (as evidences by his actions) hesitant to use them to protect his family or property.
Anyway, sorry for the long post. We were treated so well by these people that I felt compelled to share this with you guys. If you are looking for a watch or some jewelry this holiday season, consider checking these guys out. Tell them Bruce’s friend Mark sent ya and I bet they’ll really take care of you.
