Alright, this time I'm coming, the week will be of April 10th. I've got to pick up an AK from MeanSteve and it's a little warmer than November hopefully. If possible I'd like to get a dinner going on Monday night, I'm pretty sure the wife and I are staying ast the Reno Hilton. Pipe up if you have some ideas for stuff for us to see on the way home and maybe an interesting route. Right now I'm looking at taking 80 to Elko, staying the night there, heading on to Ely and staying the night there. Anything to see or any detours worth taking on that route?
I'll pass on seeing the "shoe tree". |
You're going to Ely first, right? I don't wanna steer you away from Elko, but If you go to Ely, 50 W. is marginally less boring than I-80. I mean, on 50, you get to go through Austin and Eureka. I-80 is 75 mph through Beautiful Mtn, Winnemucca, Lovelock, and the charming burg of Ferntucky, on to Reno. I drive 80 quite a bit, it's a sleeper. 50's kinda a sleeper too. Hell, I don't know, wanna come to Elko and eat Basque? If you're just coming for the night, that's about the only noteworthy thing in Elko.
I have a lot of crap going on that week. If you can see your way clear to come down to Gardnerville/Minden sometime between Sunday-Friday, 2pm to 10pm, we can have at least a small meet and greet at hamdog's. I am sure that Meansteve will make it, GryphonX and snakeeye are possibles, and certainly anyone else would be welcome. Beckett, LT, HIWATHL? pick a night.
Plan is to go from Vegas to Reno then head east then back south.
Bob, If you want to stay in Winnemucca, let me know and I'll hook you at the WInner's Inn and Casino. Owner very pro gun.
Lots to see out that way, some very interesting country and some boring shit to. Ely is very cool...like it alot better than Elko. Be sure you email me about a week before you come so I can arrange to be here when you are.
Let us know what day you'll be up here and I'll take the night off work (I need to put in two weeks' advance notice for a night off). The best bet, as Ron was saying the other night, is to meet up in Gardnerville, have dinner at Hamdog's (seeing as how he can't get any nights off either) and the whole crew could meet up there. GryphonX lives down the way, we can invite Josh (the lad for whom we built that wicked carbine) and the other Local Guys for a get together.
As with everything with us welfare-cases up North, we'll need some advance notice what day you'll be here so we can muster the whole posse. I mean, we have a hard enough time making an ad-hoc assembly at a gun show snack bar. |
How far of a drive is it from the Reno Hilton to Hamdog's? They won't hang me in that place if I bring my Philipino wife will they?
About 50 or 60 miles southward.
And dogg, the owner got his Filipino wife out of a catalog. |
Its a 35 minute drive, its only 12-15 miles south of Carson City....the nes bypass is open so you can get thru Carson City pretty fast now. I used to go there about twice a month and its an easy drive, all freeway(almost).
The 395 bypass is only half open.
You have to still drive through over HALF of stupid Carson City. I hear the full freeway is going to be complete on December 23, 2012. The day after Armageddon. At least that way they don't have to worry about actually funding the goddamned thing. |
What is that? A toxic pit of some kind? |
Wolfie, that is what REAL Nevada looks like. Luscious ranch and farm land, scenic hills, BLUE skies. That looks like Heaven.
What.........you've never seen a fence around a Community Municipal Swimming Pool????!!!! (Now, don't get all sensitive and offended up there on me.....) |
it's the Bonham Ranch as it resides at that moment the Haze on the Pond is Steam,it was a Cool trip as we ventured on furthur to our destination
Offended? The word your looking for is proud. |

I asked the wife today and it looks like we might be leaving here on Monday morning and driving to the Reno Hilton, do I need to stop at Hamdogs for lunch or can we all meet at the Hilton Sunday night?
id prefer to go to the hilton myself then have to drive to gardnerville.....ill more than likely go no matter what though.
I thought this was AR15 dot motherfucking com, man.
Do both! Stop in the G-spot in the afternoon, then we can mosey up to the Hilton and hang with the Reno guys. |
Cattlemans...Washoe valley. Best Steak and Lobster around. Whats that about 12 miles from the Hilton. the Hilton does have a lot of resturaunts or you can go somewhere else to eat. Dont know what you have in mind for food....steak...burgers...pizza.....buffet??????????????

Don't feed the . It just encourages them. Sometimes they make sense, but even a broken clock is right twice a day, unless it's digital, in which case it may display nothing of usefullness. Seriously, gang, if you guys wanna swing by Hamdog's any time after 2pm is good for me, and the offer I placed in the original check in thread is still valid, first beer is on me! Coors light, MGD, Sierra Nevada Pale Ale, Bass, Guinness (BRILLIANT!), Pyramid Hefeweizen (mit keien zitrone fur Meansteve!) , Fat Tire, and Moose Drool on tap! 12 and 24 oz glasses! CCW welcome. Open carry welcome. Rifles welcome. Filipina wives welcome( if you get there before 2p.m. Nenita will probably start a conversation with her in Tagalog and you can just stand there and look pretty). Super crazy week in the works for me, so getting any time away is unlikely, but I'd love to have y'all. |

Snack bar? |
Ok, were leaving here Monday morning and heading strait to Gardnerville for lunch, how long is the drive from Vegas to there and what is the best route? After that I'm heading to the Hilton and will meet up with anyone for dinner, I'm thinking eating at the Hilton is good as my wife is bored to tears when I spend more than an hour BS'ing with a group of guys, she can go gamble.
Unless there is another place that she can gamble and we can eat that is good in Reno. |
Your probably better off at the Hilton then. Maybe you can run into a couple of the Gardnerville crew while there. SNACK BAR.......shit no one could find it LOL Better make it a place with a name
Cattleman's is good, but the Hilton Steakhouse blows it out of the water on the beef and lobster.
Cattleman's may be cheaper, though. |
You guys are buying so price is no object. |
That snack bar better serve Prime Rib. Bring that Polish underfolder, I'm trying to win it on Gunbroker but apparently $150 is under your reserve. |
go down to 4th street and you can get some all you can eat beaver burgers for cheap i hear....
and a Real case of Beaver Fever too Yikes! |
Uh, Larry can have mine. |
You want nothing that fourth street has to offer, unless you're goin' to the big red barn. Good place to score crack, though. Even a poindexter like me could get some there.

Highway 95 North until you hit Schurz then take 95A N/NE until Yerington. Once you hit Yerington, you'll come to a corner with a McDonald's and a Scolari's grocery store. There's a stop sign here, so it's not easy to miss. Hang a right and follow that road until it terminates. Now, here's where you get the tricky part. From here you have two choices: A longer, but less convoluted path and a shorter but all twisty path. Longer but Easier: At this interesection in Yerington (I believe there's a sign that points to Wellington and Smith Valley ((to the left)) and to Fallon, Fernley and Reno ((to the right)). Hang a right, and follow that road about 25 miles to the Ramsey Weeks Cutoff. Take the Cutoff (this saves a good twenty miles) until you reach US 50. Once you've hit US 50, take it west into Carson City (another 25 miles) until you come to US 395 (not the incomplete freeway, just ignore that until 2010). Hang a south (left) and follow that road for 20 miles! WELCOME TO THE GREATER GARDNERVILLE / MINDEN METROPLEX! Enjoy your stay! Shorter but Convoluted: At this same intersection hang a left and head toward Wellington and Smith Valley. Follow this road for about 20 miles. You should come to an intersection in Smith Valley (there's a tractor dealership at the intersection). Always, at every highway intersection you arrive at, turn right (this should keep you moving in a northly or westerly direction). Keep on keepin' on until you pass through the Walker River Canyon (totally badass, you should stop and get photographs. Words alone cannot express how cool the WRC is). If you keep on truckin' you'll eventually reach the intersection of NV 208 and US 395. Head north for approximately 20 miles. WELCOME TO THE GREATER GARDNERVILLE / MINDEN METROPLEX! Enjoy your stay. Or you could, you know. Follow the directions that Google Maps gives. Vegas to Yerington Yerington to Gardnerville This second link takes you right to Hamdog's! How about that?! If you want to go to Reno first however. Just take HWY 95A north from Yerington to Fernley, then take I-80 west until you hit Reno. To get to the Hilton, simply take the I-80 / US 395 interchange southward then get off at the Mill St. exit. Reno is so much easier than Vegas, tell you what. |
+1 on the route through Yerington..it is better than going through Fallon when going between Vegas and Reno (unless you want to see where HBS lives) also 95A goes within 3 blocks of my place in Fernley Oh wait you wanted to go to Gardnerville before Reno..never mind I like to use mapquest.com for routes/mileage (I drive a truck)...mapquest.com says 435 miles/8 hours, 46 minutes from NLV to Gardnerville on the route they come up with..but I like meansteve's route through Yerington much better. US395 north of Lee Vining, CA sucks. BTW for you southerners the first syllable of Yerington rhymes with "her" |
Christ, is it THAT easy? |
Easy, yes. Tedious and potentially mind numbing, yes. Please keep your eyes open and pay attention the vast expanses that surround you as you blast on through our great state. It will help to understand why we are so adamant about the idea that there is SO much more to nevada than Vegas. You'll still only be seeing some of the more well known parts. There is much to love about the silver state.
Sing it: "Home means Nevada..." |
Just don't Drink the Water |
na thats BS i drank the water my entire life........fuck i guess i do look like that guy.
even more things to do and see in Nothern Nevada
*nevermind some would of found the picture offenensive |
So after Reno what is the more interesting drive? I'm going either to take the 80 and spend a night in Elko, then to Ely for another night then home or from Reno take the 50 east. Looks like Austin may be an interesting place to see.
austin is neat place, then again so is ely and eureka. if you get a chance should check out lamoyal canyon(sp?) place is soooo fuckin awsome.
