If anybody needs to bend their AK flats, you are more than welcome to come over to my house on Saturday. IM/email me for directions.
thanks, Ron |
If you just want to come by and see how it's done, please feel free to. This was a sort of a last minute thing and I know some of you don't even have parts kits or flats yet.
thanks, Ron |
If you want to do a demo build I have everything we need Not being too keen or nothing
I think Mark (Dorsai) was going to bring his kits over as well.... not a problem. thanks, Ron |
I also have some U-Drives and an example of a build using them if anyone wants to try that
Just sent you an email. Very interested as well if you still have room.. BTW that dork that posted the "AK builders in Vegas area" topic, --------ABSOLUTELY NO RELATION TO ME-------- Some people should really read before posting new threads...

So how did it go today? I would have loved to observe and learn a few things but I had to go out of town, maybe next time.
Yeah... we built the rifle from a flat and it went somewhat smoothly. The hardest part was getting the barrel pin. We did the heat treating, bending, riveting and the rest of it without a hitch.
We will have to do it again soon. thanks, Ron |
I had a great time, too bad I had to leave before the barrell reassembly but definately looks like fun.. I picked out a couple of kits to buy and a few other parts as well..
picking up a few spare barrel retaining pins and a few for Mark hope these are the right ones.. www.k-var.com/shop/home.php?cat=311 model ak-020. Grabbing some rivets as well. Should I grab swell neck rivet kits or regular? Sounds like the swell necks provide more stability.. Thx again Ron, you are a terrific host and an excellent AK smith. Not to mention your wife is definately the most understanding woman on the face of the earth. Thanks of course also to Pete and Mark as well they definately know their way around the AK as well.. Take care,, John P.. |
No problem on on getting together.... I had a blast. The rest of us just felt bad the you had to leave so fast after the wife called and was looking for you j/k As for the barrel pin, you may just want to call JoeKen and check if they will be attending the gun this coming weekend. They have good rivet sets and barrel pins plus, I think the cross members are better quality than the Tapco ones that I have used on a couple builds. The Joeken website states that the cross member and rivet are Bulgarian. If you order from K-Var... I think the shipping is $12 and they don't let you do a local pick up. So, same price for the shipping as going to the gun show if Joeken will be there. thanks, Ron |
Ron, good point. I'm doing a steel shoot Saturday morning, then going to the show in the afternoon. I'll check for rivets and pins there so John ought to hold of on ordering the parts. No sense paying shipping if you've already paid admission to the show!
Will hold off on the pins and rivets.. I've got a class to attend on Saturday but will be at the G-show on Sunday for sure, maybe saturday if it gets out early enough.. Just bought a demill 2005 M-92 Krink kit .. Going to talk to couple other places about an ak74s/ak74, Polish UF, and maybe one more, hoping to get all through same place maybe they'll cut me a deal if I buy 2-4 kits from them at one time..
The wife thing turned out to be nothing,, son was screwing with her on the phone. Really wanted to see Pete's rifle get a barrell. Again can't thank you all enough, fantastic company and learning experience,, Take care,, John P.. |

That turned out REALLY well. We had all read a post about someguy that froze his barrel and heated up the trunion and the barrel just slipped right in. We have all had experience of installing barrels and it's not an easy task. Well, it being so nasty outside, the barrel felt pretty close to frozen so Mark decided to warm up the trunion. Sure enough, the barrel just dropped in half way. Getting the barrel in the first half inch alone is the hardest part because the receiver wants to bend before the barrel moves. When it comes time to build your weapon, it will be even easier with that method. Next time we can soak the barrel (chamber area) in ice water for an even easier fit. thanks, Ron |

SON OF A B****!!!!!!!!! OK, so I'm an idiot.........got pics from yesterday's efforts, but cannot upload cause they're more than 1mb!!!!!(slightly) Someone tell me how to shrink them and I'll get them posted! |
Ron,
Thanks for being a great host: I certainly learned a thing or 2 yesterday. I'll be ordering a Yugo U/F today, unless I can tack one onto Edicut's order and split the postage cost? I've seen them for $140 on Centrefire; is that a good source? Rick |
Well, somehow got 7 or 8 pics uploaded to Image Shack, now tell me how to post them here......and NOT with typing all those @#$%^&* url stuff!!! |
OK... copy and paste a a link for a picture. When you reply to this thread, you will see the Insert Tags box below where you are typing. The icon for the image function is the 9th icon on the top row from the left. Click that icon (looks like a yellow squre with mountians and a black triangle at the top left corner) and paste the address from imageshack into the box. It will place the image in your reply. It the PREVIEW button to make sure they loaded. thanks, Ron |

Rick I looked at the 140.00 kit at CSI, and you know I have little experience but the dark bore thing sort of scares me personally. If you're set on a Yugo UF over a polish, might want to check out 70.84.217.219/cgi-bin/store/agora.cgi?&cart_id=5623157.13954*WH5eS8 They have several Yugo UF grades available and it looks like your CSI for 140.. is available at Akron for 130, or you could get a better grade. I was looking at the Polish UF kits there as well as the Polish UFs at Dansammo.com. As it stands now I'm interested in kits at Ohio Rapid Fire(ak74s/ak74), and a polish UF at either Dans or Akron. I've been looking at the excellent grades though myself, I know I'm going to have to refinish, but I figure the working parts would be be better quality as well. I'll make my calls on Monday and post on here which places I'm buying from and anyone in the Vegas area or willing to pick up from this area is welcome to tack on an order. I'll pay for them, just need a solid commitment for payment later. I'm holding off on the flats, retaining pins and rivet kits till after next weekends gunshow. If nothing available there then I'll repost with more info on that order.. Take care,, John P.. |

Beware of Copes when I got my first Kit is was quite nice but if you noticed that stock I had yesterday that had all the finish flaking off that was one the the "Hand Picked" from about a month ago it also had half the fire control group missing, I think they are running low |

Don't laugh too hard Bob... we needed some spare sheet metal for AK flats and the only donor we could find was a light metallic blue 1968 mustang thanks, Ron |

All three of those comments posted within 3 minutes of each other... thanks, Ron |

Do you think one of those door handles would make a good carry handle
Try this. Works great.
