Hello everyone. I'm wondering if anyone might be able to tell me the benefits of joining one department over the other. On their websites, they pretty much stack up the same in regards to benefits offered, work hours (4 10hr shifts a week; sounds to good to be true), and etc...although one difference I've noted is the pay. North Vegas Officers get paid about 4k more; wonder why? Oh, and another question, does anyone know if or when commissioned officers are allowed to work second jobs? I couldn't imagine just working 4 days a week; sorry, I guess slaving working for the family business jaded me a bit hankHave a safe and great weekend.

The benefits are comparable...

One thing you need to look at is the overall dept. and what opportunities for movement, assignment, and promotion.

Henderson is another option too.

As for 3 days off, overtime is available. With the casinos, they pay for officers to work certain events or days. This doesn't come from the taxpayers, so this ever getting cut is unlikely.

NLVPD is hurting for people right now. The department is trying to hire over 100 officers in the next couple of years.

Competition isnt too bad either. Last time, 300 people tested and only 33 passed all the tests and made it to the background investigation.

Thank you all for your replies.

I received an acceptance invitation for testing with LVMPD at the end of this month, so i'll go ahead and test with them first. Wow, only 33 out of 300, is that normal with most departments?

Thanks again and have a safe and great weekend.

When you see the people that apply, it shoudl probably be less than that

Dopers, ex-felons, and people that shouldn't reproduce show up to test. They think goign to prison or jail makes them a better candidate.

Flexin,, a bit of advise if I may. Go to the library and check out the books on Police Dept. testing. Pick up more than one most of the larger county libraries will have 3-4 different books, granted alot of the info is the same but you'll find a ton of useful pretests and info to help you pass the oral board, and practicals(scenarios).. you'll be amazed at how similar the actual test is and whats in the books. Not sure if Metro still uses same test as they did but if they do, you'll have a memorization test in it as well, which is covered in the books..

Most of the books I looked at were neat to read, but had very little that was actually similar.

Look at it like this though....if reading that book gets you a couple extra points, that could be enough to get you gired.

Take which ever one that will hire you. A friend of mine who just graduated from UNLV couldnt find a job with any PD quick enough. Now he sells fertilizer to Lowe's and Home Depot. Yeah I know. He went to college to sell that. Fertilizer is a nicer way of saying what he really sells. The news the other night showed that Dave Kallas of the PPA finally getting a little pay hike for police. Still too short in my standard since the highest paid police according to channel 8 is San Francisco police with base pay of $87,000 a year. Yes they are still hiring. http://www.sfgov.org/site/police_index.asp
Finding housing is a whole new question.
