I'm trying to relocate to Reno and was wondering if anybody had the inside scoop on engineering job opportunities in the area.  I'm a software/electrical engineer with experience in Windows, C++ and embedded programming.

Any hints or tips?  Thanks!

WHY???? RENO REALY SUCKS!!!! I USED TO LIVE THERE in that SHIT HOLE (SPARKS). The southern part of the state is where all the money and power and the good jobs are,, One of the biggest reasons we moved was the "FUCKING AWFUL" WEATHER.

Vegas is the place, Baby!!!!!lol

You can probably find something here in Las Vegas, don't let the heat scare you from moving here.  look at careerbuilder.com or hotjobs.com and do a state search for job opportunities.

don't listen to the clark county crowd, they is a bunch off liberals down there, having to register your handguns and such

Check Dice.com, Monster.com, and rgj.com

the area code is 775

There are a few jobs that I have seen in the area for your talents.

Caution though, MOST will not pay relocation, and will not respond to out of area resumes. I am using my in-laws addy and have had good response.

Reno/Sparks has it's drawbacks just like anyplace else, politically it is far more conservative than lost wages, as is the rest of the state outside of LV. Unfortunately, LV is about 1/2 of the voting power of the entire state.

my in-laws live about 40 minutes north of reno, in the north valleys.

I've tried to make it clear in cover letters that I'd be happy to pay my own relocation costs, but the second part seems to be where the problem lies.  It's frustrating to see the same jobs open week after week but I can't get anyone to even acknowledge receipt of a resume.

I guess I'll just have to wait for the house to sell and head out there.  It's the only reason I'm not out there already.

I moved to the Reno area 3 years ago and I really like it!
Wouldn't like to trade it with Vegas! And I have the choice to live in either place!!

LRdrvr

P.S.: The population in Reno is skyrocketing!
And so are the real estate prices...

Yeah, that's a good trade, registration of your handguns for indoor ranges........

Actually, there is an indoor range that opened up in Carson. The range in Sparks was closed down by the EPA for noncompliance. Soon all indoor ranges will suffer the same fate.

And Brother Raider, you are correct, I drive less than a 1/2 mile from my in-laws, to shoot all I want, no fee, no bother. AND NO TOURISTS!

wow LarryG36 let it all hang out you probably moved just in time....but I can't even think about moving to a Bigger Shit Hole than Reno.I bet the same woes exist at each end of the Battle Born State....I wish more of the Kali Klowns would move to Vegas to boost the economy and be with there brethren.Kali is good in one respect keep building Indian Casino's and let Reno die this area is over exploited for it's resources, tough economy and high housing cost's.I hope folks moving find Paradise in Clark County no big loss to the North end of state...The South will gain from it and best wishes

But you have to admit that Southern Nevada (Clark County) is becoming just like kalifornia, same liberal politics, same yuppie attitudes, etc....

Outside the city limits of Las Vegas (which is actually pretty small geographically) the politics tend to be solidly conservative.

In my experience, most of the Californians that moved here move because they DON'T like what is going on across the border or don't care one way or another.  Also, the Nevada Constitution has many pro gun rights written into it that preclude local and county govts from enacting too much on their own.  For example, the only reason the "blue card" is here in Clark is because it was grandfathered.  If they wanted to do it today, they couldn't by law and there is nothing they could do about it (except change the constitution of course).

Also to add to Rick's point, Boulder City has a grandfathered clause about NOT needing a bluecard for handgun registrations.

Uhhh....Guys, I didn't mean to have this turn into a North vs. South thread.  We have enough of that down here already.  I was just hoping somebody had an inside track on some engineering job opportunities.

I promise to not write off Vegas as a possible relocation point, but it's not my first choice.

Have you tried IGT? Intuit & Microsoft also have offices in Reno but I don't think they do much hiring off the street here.

Raider, if you are certified in networking and anything novell or windows2000 you might be able to get a job at the district. They are having a shortage of teachers and most of the 'IT staff' (term used lightly, since many are inept at securing their network) are being pulled back into the classroom, leaving positions to be filled for maintaining the network. The sweet part of the job is that most of the tech calls you'll get will be handled by students in a form of internship where they basically do everything annoying. I was good friends with a kid that did that job and he said he did most of his ECS's work for him.

Anyways, hope that was a useful lead.

OOOH!OOOH! Chris Guinciglinguineani or whatever the hell her name is.
Where does Rusty Humphries call home...?
And we don't need an indoor range because we are, rugged, independant, and hardy folk up here. Rain, sleet, wind, snow, heat and lizards, we ain't scared. Biff and Chip can have the air-conditioned, perfectly lit indoor ranges. I like to practice from multiple positions and in 360 degrees!

In Boulder City, it is illegal to have a weapon concealed you your vehicle without a permit. The same bullshit also goes in North Las Vegas.

So when you are driving around just leave it on the passenger seat or up on the dash.  Makes for quicker access if needed.  :)

The Boulder City, NLV conceal laws means shit if you have a NV CCW, if you have it your totally legal. Also it is legal to open carry in those two cities just like anywhere else in NV.
