U.S. Attorney Announces New Grant to Expand Efforts to Combat Gun Violence

Additional Resources to Share Gun Intelligence and get Trigger Pullers Off the Streets

U.S. Attorney Annette L. Hayes announced today the expansion of the Project Safe Neighborhood program in the Puget Sound region, with additional focus on crime gun intelligence in South King and Pierce Counties.
The U.S. Department of Justice awarded $500,000 to the program which will enhance intelligence sharing between law enforcement agencies so that guns used in crimes can be linked, helping law enforcement build cases for prosecution.

I mean.. it sounds like a good idea.  Except they just let the criminals back out onto the streets after they prosecute them.

Well what are they supposed to do.  The question is are they actually going to actually going to charge them with a firearm crime?

They can build all the cases they want, it’s the prosecution part they don’t understand.

Over on the SeattleWA reddit page, during a recent gun control discussion, one user said that although he knows stolen guns are a problem, he doesn't support enforcing those laws because "they exponentially target minorities"

Oh and that comment got a bunch of upvotes.

Progressives do not care about enforcing laws when they impact their helpless pet demographics, even when those individuals are the ones committing crimes that enable others to wreak havoc.

I also find the duplicity amusing. They know that some crimes are committed primarily by specific groups, but that translates internally for them into those groups being "targeted" by police. I mean, yes, it is sort of the police's job to target criminals

You're being too polite and politically correct.

I have heard from friends in local law enforcement that the feds are suddenly taking violent gun crime very seriously.  Apparently, for the past several years, it was nearly impossible to get the feds to prosecute a gun case involving repeat violent felons, but in the last few months they have been taking taking bunches of local cases for federal prosecution.  The general consensus seems to be that they have received very different marching orders under the new administration.

As far as prosecuting stolen guns, those are almost always done locally and King County prosecutors generally interpret the law to mean that cops have to prove the person holding the stolen gun knew for sure that it was stolen (not just "reasonably should have known...").  Basically, the cops have to catch them in the act of stealing it, or get a statement from the suspect that they knew it was stolen.  Hence, stolen gun prosecutions are very rare in King County.  Oddly, they don't always apply the same rigid standard to other types of stolen property (cars for example).

Are they going to put their own in jail?

And if that happens they will enact laws like the recent ones in California to keep them out.  It's not about the guns.
