Debit card No credit cards here....Got myself it WAY too much trouble with them years ago. I now work on the "If I can't pay cash for it, I don't need it".

Told the lady on the phone that I'm sure Wells Fargo doesn't have these issues.

Her answer: "Well, we can't control the weather. Our main branch lost power."

I know how I run MY datacenter. Lets see, power goes out, Backup battery kicks on, Generator kicks on. Rinse and repeat. Nothing goes down.

Well it's too bad you're out of town then, cause we're currently running on generators here at work man! They even had to shut down some old servers and the old SAN in the development network to take load off of the generators.

So what you're saying is that LR managed to bungle paying for a hotel room AGAIN.

No thanks, I'm in real estate, I know a bad deal when I see one.

I say this to people whenever I see them having trouble with a computer of any kind. I usually get "Not really!", but sometimes, I get some very interesting responses, usually along the lines of

I can't imagine relying on just a debit card, particularly while traveling, unless you are also carrying a HUGE wad of money around with you. Things can always go wrong, and it's just too easy to bump up against your daily withdrawl limit, especially over a weekend. Or, as you found out, something going wrong at the bank.

Were it not for a credit card, I'd probably still be in Bumfuck, Montana where the transfer case in my Suburban puked it's guts out necessating a 200 mile tow over a mountain pass in a snow storm, the installation of a rebuilt transfer case, and a couple of unplanned extra nights in a motel room. After that I vowed to ALWAYS have a healthy line of credit immediately available for emergency or unplanned major events.

As for credit unions, we've banked with BECU for years now and have always been happy with the service we have received.

I agree with all that. Also, some car rental places want a credit card and not debit. Up until last weekend I was happy with a $500 credit card. However, Las Vegas hotels aren't so cheap. As soon as I got back I called and had them increase my line of credit.

Ive told this story before.

East Coast mid 90's, NY-DC. GF gettin itchy and wanted a room, no biggie.

My CC- Declined, My other CC Declined, My Debit Card- Declined.

Corporate CC- Declined, Corprate AMEX - Declined.

It was around $110 for the room cash, I had about $106.83 or some shit. He let me slide. Int he morning I went to the ATM and withdrew $500 cash.

Lesson learned, In God we trust, all others cash!

I had fun a few years trying to check out of a Tel Aviv hotel. I had been on a 4 week long business trip, and my credit card was maxed out.

It took a few calls but I got my limit increased and was able to get home.

PCR, you HAVE to go into debt eventually. You're getting married (expensive)... next will be the house purchase...

Get a Credit card, do it for the children.

You had an account and they wouldn't cash checks for you?

I like Bank of America. I do NOT like Wells Fargo. With BofA my deposits are credited to my account immediately. With Wells Fargo it seemed like it would take 3 days minimum. That and their "free checking" scheme to get you in there and charge you crazy fees for every other thing they can think of.
