So if a guy wanted a badassed .308, what should he buy?
DSA STG58 para...a good inexpensive entry level auto-loader, parts and mags are common and cheap
If you want a Main Battle Rifle, your choices come down to FAL, M1A, or HK. I think all 3 are worthy, world class rifles. For me, it came down to the picking of very small nits to choose the FAL. YMMV |
Featherweight bolt for hunting. Hard to best 5lb .308s for carry.
FAL for simi-auto. I'm sold on 'em. DSA is the best, but around $1200! |
I picked the same nits, and built an M14/M1A. <shrug> Of course, I later built a FAL-- and I'm trying to get the parts for a G3 too, so I don't know-- [shrug] --they're all fun. |

I like my FAL over my M1A, I have both. The FAL is a more robust design. The M1A will be a little more accurate with irons compared to FAL iron sites. The FAL has a shorter site radius. But get a couple arms mounts and have a scope one one and red dot on the other. Some people complain there is no forward assist on the FAL but that's and easy fix, just get the Israeli Original Forward Assist Cocking Handle.

Bolt Gun:
Remington PSS, or their varmint series Auto Loaders: AR-10 is super accurate and AR based M1A is nice all around weapon system but not as accurate as the AR-10 without modifications or upgrades. HK 91, expensive but with the right ammo can be very accurate FAL, I only owned one but didn't like the accuracy. |
In the finest arfcom tradition: Get 'em all! Even if they're "clones". They're still a shitpot o fun!
I figured you would say "Get a pistol!" |
If you have the cash - M1As are hard to beat.
But we budget minded fellows have had great affection for FAL's... I've never been keen on G3 types because of the fluted chamber and way-forward cocking handle but the world has handled worse problems. |
I'm partial to the HK. I have a Greek SAR-8 and am waiting for a new PTR-91 from Sarco.
Ok, what on Gods Green Earth is the Micky Mouse piece of work?.. |
and, I hope that you've already started to buy the ammuntion.
My preference is the FAL, plenty of parts and inexpensive mag availability. I got rid of my Cetme/HK clone as the fluted chamber design and roller action limits you to milsurp, brass ammo and mangles your empties.
Well, PHuckin' A, Phil, YOU'VE got all the ammo! And WE still don't have an answer to WHAT KIND of .308 bigscrun wants except for 'bad-ass'...BOLT or AUTO. If you're willing to sell him some ammo, well, he might tell us what kind of .308 he wants, depending on how much ammo he has and how he wants to 'expend' it! This would be good to know...ONE SHOT - ONE KILL...or, BUMP IT! |
Now that makes two of us. I wonder how many of us have both but like one over the other? Scrun where is the poll? This thread is worthless with out one... ETA Spelling |

Yours is picky? My AR10 has eaten everything from 110gr to 220gr reloads. (110, 125, 147, 155, 168, 175, 190, 220). |
M14/M1a is my first choice, in the nice climate we have here, a GI chrome lined barrel and synthetic stock work great. The FAL is a great MBR, but it has more springs than an M1a has parts and the triggers SUCK. I have shot FALs that have been sent away to guns smiths and DSA to have a trigger job and they still suck compaired to a GI trigger in the M14/M1a or a NM M14/M1a trigger. YMMV

AR-10. Get an Eagle Arms lower and the Armalite's uppers: one carbine and one A4, float the tube and be happy!

Man, I hate to say that truth, but get all!
I love my AR10, slowly but surely its replacing my FAL as my one true love. I have trust issues from all the adverse propaganda, but she is becoming always faithful in my mind. Expensive mags are my only issue thus far. That said, my DSA FAL is one helluva weapon in its own right, cheap mags and always ready. I have a G3. I took it back to Ohio to keep in my other safe, while dependable and fun, nuff said. M1A is on the short list. I cant speak for her yet, but I cant see what an expensive mag wood stock weapon could possible have to offer that would make me replace the AR10 or FAL as number one beeyatch. |
I've been thinking for a while that an M1A would be cool to save for but I read a thread elsewhere on the site that said Springfield was having quality control issues. Anyone else heard that or is it just the rumor mill working? I do love the Garand family of guns... |
I voted for hookers and blow and a .308.
Chicks with guns....Mmmmmmmmmmm |
So, I'm guessing the BOLT GUN is not in the running...
In that case --- AR10 THEN, A BOLT-GUN! |
I said more money for your wedding,
Face the facts, You may only have 3 or 4 weddings in your life, but you will have lots more firearms! |
I used to be a FAL guy all the way, but after buying and shooting the PTR-91K, G3 clone, has changed my point of veiw. The K model with the dimentions of the smaller HK93 with less envelope weight provides excellent accurate handleing and balance. Out of box preformance is outstanding and has become my favorite 308 battle rifle.

With reviews like that how can you dissagree? I'm pretty sure ELF actually writes for Guns n' Ammo. |
well u have fired mine! just get a shorter one like one of those DSA STG58's
