Texas: Passes non-discrimination protection to lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender individuals
In one of the most dangerous constitutional violations Liberty Institute has ever seen, the City of San Antonio passed a so-called non-discrimination protection to lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender individuals in a way that stifles free speech and tramples on religious liberty. The law targets citizens and businesses that hold traditional religious views about sexuality, and grants special protected status and rights to homosexual, bisexual, and transgendered individuals. Among other items, the ordinance: Subjects members of Boards and Commissions to liability for “malfeasance” if they have “demonstrate[ed] a bias by word or deed . . . on the basis of . . . sexual orientation, [or] gender identity . . . while acting in the official capacity while in such public position." Prohibits businesses from discriminating on basis of sexual orientation or gender identity in public accommodations, which includes “every business within the city . . . open to the general public and offers, for compensation, any product service or facility.” The penalty is a Class C Misdemeanor Prohibits discrimination in the sale or rental of housing. This offense is also a Class C Misdemeanor, although there is a very narrow exemption for religious organizations. Mandates that businesses and individuals contracting with the City must not engage in discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity. “The Ordinance is a cloudy and confusing collection of poorly thought out and conflicting statements that could have been more clearly and cleanly handled by simply including a broad religious liberty exemption to protect the free speech and religious liberty rights of both individuals and organizations that have religious objections to the requirements mandated by the Ordinance,” said Liberty Institute President & CEO Kelly Shackelford. View Quote I am completely supportive of the rights of people to be LGBT but the way the Texas government is going about this is all wrong and could have some far reaching unintended consequences. Texas: Half of America's Worst Cities for Food Lovers
Some cities are so synonymous with food that they have dishes named after them: New York Cheesecake, Boston Cream Pie, Philly Cheesesteak, Los Angeles Linguini. Okay, maybe that last one isn’t real, but the fact that there are some great cities for foodies in the U.S. is totally indisputable. But for every perfectly made crepe, there’s a soggy pancake; a deflated souffle; a burnt grilled cheese sandwich. This post is about those cities where food is definitely an afterthought—the country’s dead zones of cuisine, where it’s tough to be a foodie.

Pennsylvania: Residents Ticketed for Parking in their Own Driveways.
CBS Pittsburgh reported Wednesday that Pittsburgh residents have been receiving tickets and warning letters for parking in their own driveways. According to the story, local law dictates vehicles must be parked at least 30 feet from the street.
The law, which originated in the mid-20th Century, is little known among locals. Yet, residents on two streets in different sections of the city have been targeted for violating it. Apparently, they need an “occupancy permit” to legally park in their own driveways now. One unfortunate family, who obviously didn’t get one, reportedly paid $2,400 for their “mistake.” View Quote More |

T-shirts, patches and other clothing containing slogans for beer, alcohol, drugs, gangs or sex will also be prohibited. Other verboten garments will include cut-off jeans with ragged edges, cut-out dresses and spaghetti-straps if teachers aren’t wearing at least two layers. Florida: Herpes-infected Monkeys Terrorize Citizens
Hundreds of rare wild monkeys — some carrying herpes — are on the loose in Florida after a tour guide brought the spunky critters to the state long ago.
Wildlife officials said that three pairs of Rhesus monkeys were transported to a park near Ocala in the 1930s by tour operator Colonel Tooey after a “Tarzan” flick sparked a fascination with the creature. But the breed has since boomed and more than 1,000 of the monkeys now live in the state, wildlife officials say. State officials have caught more than 700 of the monkeys in the past decade — most of which tested positive for the herpes-B virus. Texas: High School Textbook Rewrites the Second Amendment.
Controversy is brewing around a school district in Denton, Texas, that is said to be using a United States history book that seems to summarize the Second Amendment inaccurately. However, the Denton Independent School District maintains it only uses the book as “supplemental” material and is “disseminating the correct information on the Second Amendment” from other texts.
David Corbin, PhD, a professor of politics at King’s College, told TheBlaze that the description of the Second Amendment is “incorrect.” “The incorrect description of ‘the right to keep and bear arms in a state militia’ above makes one’s right dependent upon’s one’s membership in a state militia,” he said. “The founders believed, to quote William Blackstone, that the right to keep and bear arms was an individual right ‘auxiliary to the natural right of resistance and self-preservation.’” Again, the poorly worded summary doesn’t necessarily mean there was a deliberate attempt to undermine the Second Amendment. Arizona: Two Years Later Injured robber's lawsuit dismissed
PRESCOTT - Michael Lewis, who owns Mike's Mini-Mart on Gurley Street, was found not liable by a jury in a civil court case for the injuries sustained by a man he shot during a robbery in September 2011.
Scott LaFonte, 37, filed the suit after the county attorney declined to charge Lewis, 50, in the shooting. He asked for unspecified damages, as well as lost wages and medical expenses. The lawsuit claimed that Lewis, who knew LaFonte, was "motivated by spite or ill will" when he shot LaFonte three times on Sept. 14, 2011, outside the store at 924 E. Gurley Street. A Prescott Police report said Lewis claimed LaFonte, a regular customer, put a 12-pack of beer on the checkout counter, asked for cigarettes, and then pulled a knife. He told Lewis "not to come after him or he would stab him," and left the store without paying, the report said. Lewis took a .40 caliber Glock pistol from his vehicle, and chased LaFonte, and LaFonte came toward Lewis with the knife, the report said. Lewis "fired one warning shot in the air," and when LaFonte came within six to eight feet of him, Lewis shot him three times, the report said. Lewis then called police. View Quote More |

Michigan: 300 Million Dollar Bailout for Failed Detroit
The White House announced on Friday a $320 million bailout, er, aid package for the bankrupt city of Detroit because of "exceptional" circumstances. But to adapt President Obama, every broke city believes in its own exceptionalism, and now others will want a financial infusion too.
The federal funds, which were cobbled together from programs including TARP and the Federal Emergency Management Agency, are supposedly intended to encourage private investment. The aid includes $150 million to remove blight and spur redevelopment; $30 million for public safety and to hire 150 firefighters; and $140 million to improve transportation. The Administration is also offering its technical expertise to help overhaul the city's dysfunctional computer systems. Let's hope those aren't the same guys who designed the ObamaCare exchanges. Foundations such as Kresge, Ford, Knight and Skillman have already poured more than $70 million this year into initiatives to rebuild Detroit. Kresge alone has committed $35 million for the city's new street-car system and $150 million over five years to implement the Detroit Future City plan to revive downtrodden neighborhoods. Two weeks ago, NCB Capital Impact and Kresge announced a $30.25 million fund to support development along the street-car line. Texas: Deploy Mine Resistant Ambush Protection armored vehicle.
What a Christmas little Bastrop had! It’s still a mystery how Santa Claus got it down the chimney, but Bastrop got a nifty present that most children could only dream about: a big honkin’, steel-clad, war toy called MRAP.
But Bastrop is not a 6-year-old child, and an MRAP is not a toy. Bastrop is a Texas county of some 75,000 people, and MRAP stands for “Mine-Resistant Ambush Protected.” It’s a heavily armored military vehicle weighing about 15 tons — one of several versions of fighting machines that have become the hot, must-have playthings of police departments all across the country. Are the good people of Bastrop facing some imminent terrorist threat that warrants military equipment? No, it’s a very pleasant, laid-back place. And while the county is named for a 19th century land developer and accused embezzler, it’s never been a haven for particularly dangerous criminals — indeed, the relatively few crimes in Bastrop today don’t rise above the level of routine police work. Even the sheriff’s department, which is the proud owner of the MRAP tank, says it doesn’t have a specific use for the machine, but “It’s here if we need it.” Well, yeah … but that same feeble rational would apply if the county decided to get an atom bomb — you just never know when a big mushroom cloud might come in handy! What we have here is the absurdly dangerous militarization of America’s police departments. Our sprawling Department of Homeland Security and the Pentagon (which gave the MRAP to Bastrop) are haphazardly spreading war equipment, war techniques and a war mentality to what are supposed to be our communities’ peacekeepers and crime solvers. Florida: Man Wants to Marry his Laptop (computer)
A Florida judge has tossed out a bizarre motion from a man who claimed he wanted to marry his "porn filled Apple computer." Marc Sevier attempted to intervene in a same-sex marriage case "on behalf of other minority sexual orientation groups," reports the Broward-Palm Beach New Times, which notes that the filing is "obviously an attempt to punk the legal system because he doesn't agree with gay marriage." Sevier claimed that after buying a laptop without porn filters, he became addicted to pornography, "fell in love" with his computer, and preferred "having sex with it over all other persons or things." If gay people "have the right to marry their object of sexual desire, even if they lack corresponding sexual parts," he said, "then I should have the right to marry my preferred sexual object." Virginia: Bans School Car Washes
Charity car washes and car wash fundraisers are now banned on school property there, after the Department of Environmental Services issued new rules for stormwater and water runoff.
The county pins the blame on the Virginia General Assembly, which approved more stringent water regulations last year. “There is an underlying reason why most types of car washing are not allowed under state and federal stormwater regulations,” DES spokeswoman Shannon Whalen told the Arlington News. Those important reasons: washing cars can cause chlorinated water and soap to wash into local streams, which flow into the Potomac River and Chesapeake Bay. View Quote Will not be noticed. Darin tried to do the right thing by immediately bringing the toy gun to his teacher and explained that “he knows he’s not supposed to have it.” His mom, Jennifer, said, “So I send my child to school. My child discovers a fake toy gun at about 1:30 p.m. He turns it in to the teacher and he’s sent to the office and suspended.” Darin is sad and confused about why he can’t go back to elementary school. Texas: Votes to Pay Slave Reparations
The Dallas County Commissioners Court declared Tuesday that African-Americans deserve reparations for slavery, even though most commissioners didn’t seem to know that they were doing so.
The issue arose in a resolution written by John Wiley Price, the county’s only black commissioner. Described only as a “Juneteenth Resolution,” it was approved unanimously. ---snip--- But Price’s resolution went beyond taking note of Juneteenth; it included a long list of injustices endured by blacks, from slavery to Jim Crow to predatory lending practices. Then, in its final paragraph, it declared that the suffering of African-Americans should be “satisfied with monetary and substantial reparations.” View Quote They're actually using the TL:DR argument. ATF agents spent most of the day at a home on East 33rd Street in Erie. The agents were joined by bomb squad members from the Erie Police Department and bomb squad members from Millcreek Police and the Erie County Sheriff's Department.
The officers removed over 60 guns from the home at 827 East 33rd Street as surprised neighbors watched. Dozens of boxes of fireworks were also loaded onto a truck an driven away. The Special Agent in Charge would not comment on the investigation except for saying it was an "enforcement action." Neighbors described the residents of the home as "an older couple" in their 60s or 70s. They described the couple as "very friendly and neighborly." Agents asked neighbors on either side of the residence to vacate their homes as the investigation began. An Emergycare ambulance stood by down the block as the officers searched the home. The Erie County HAZMAT team was called to the home around 9:30pm. It is unknown what prompted that call. Similar investigations took place today at two homes in Crawford County. Iowa: $500 Fine For Kids Playing With Toy Guns
If you have a child, and live in the city of Burlington, Iowa, you may have to get written permission from the city before your child is allowed to play with a toy gun. This includes squirt guns, nerf guns, etc. ANY toy gun now faces a city-wide ban requiring city official approval. And if your child does not have permission, it’s a $500 fine per offense.
The Burlington Iowa City Council is moving to pass an ordinance that would require you to get their WRITTEN permission before your kids can play with toy guns, replica guns, BB guns, etc! If your kids play with these toys in most outdoor situations, or if they play with toy guns in the car while you drive them around, you are looking at a fine in excess of $500 and up to a month in jail! North Carolina: Outlaws American Flags
Several people showed up with American flags to protest Woodruff High School’s decision to make students remove flags from their vehicles.
On September 11, four students showed up at the school with U.S. flags flying from their vehicles. The flags were confiscated after officials said it was against school district policy to “draw attention” to one’s vehicle. The flags were returned at the end of the day and the students were not punished. Parents who were upset with the decision went to social media to voice their opinion. They also planned the protest, which took place Monday morning. Around a dozen people were seen driving by the front of the school flying flags on their vehicles. A group of about 10 more people were seen standing on the sidewalk waving flags. Parents told us the protest was to show their opposition to the “zero tolerance policy." View Quote Source |

Wyoming: School Bans English Language.
Kindergartners and first grade students will not be allowed to speak English in half of their classes at a Wyoming elementary school this year. The reason, said officials at Park Elementary School in Casper, Wyoming, is the school is now offering dual-language education.
The 5- and 6-year-old students will speak Spanish for half the school day, and English for the other half. It is all part of a new program in the state designed to help students learn a second language more quickly. “They don't do this at every school, so I am lucky to be doing this,” said Saul Rodriguez, a bilingual teacher and native Spanish speaker.
