Hmm, since I came across this one...

For expandable baton (like ASP), is it illegal to pocess at all, or only limited to carry on person? That's the part I never get to understand. If a civilian can purchase one at gunshow, I suppose it's legal to pocess at their residency, but not on person out in the public. Someone know the answer?

Hmmmm

Guess I'm gonna have to start wearing red plaid flannel and carrying a bed full of wood around in the back of my truck to justify my tiny little camp hatchet that stays in my truck.

I actually knew someone of whom I will call an acquaintance because he is not actually my friend. He got pulled over in Los Angeles for speeding and while reaching for registration in glovebox the man opens it and out rolls a collasped baton.  Then somehow he kicked a female cop as he was cuffed because she punched him. He pleaded guilty on the felony charges and was put on probation for 5 years. This happened in 1997. No jail time.  Not saying do it cause you will get off the hook, but its not worth your time and hassle of going thru the criminal justice system.

Illegal period, unless you are a licensed security guard with baton certification.

Various other implements are not illegal until modified (putting a wrist strap or leather thong (not that kind of leather thong git yerminds out of the gutter) on a large hickory axe or pick handle used to do it.)  or used as a weapon.

Just because it is sold at retail doesn't mean it is legal.  It's kind of up to the buyer to know and not the seller.  For example, you periodiaclly see spring assisted knifes for sale, they are illegal here, yet Wal-Mart carries them in many states (and usually don't let them get here but it has happened.) I've also seen knifes at the Military exchanges that are illegal in this state.  One of my sons' (yes all my sons have idiot friends.) idiot friends just spent 10 days as a guest of the county for telling an LEO he had a knife in the car when asked at a traffic stop.  (My son's know enough to not allow fishing searches and when to keep their yaps shut.)  this supposedly legal knife (it wasn't) was for work and all the guys where he works use them for box cutters and strapping cutters, unfortunately they have spring assisted opening and he didn't leave his at work.

ASPS and batons are legal to sell to LEOs, guards, etc.  Surplus demilled grenades are sometimes seen as curios, if they aren't adequately demilled they might break the law. Nunchuks, throwing stars, etc are illegal but can be taken to and from martial arts lessons, which implies that having them at home ONLY FOR TRAINING purposes is legal.

You really need to read the entire law and then find out what some of the case law is because in the last few years (15??) a variety of things have been added that in the past were fine.

I think this thread has run it's course.

In Kommiefornia you denied the tools to defend oneself from an overpowering adversary(s).  Of course the criminal will not have these items when they attack you either.  Maybe they ought to outlaw martial arts classes.  That stuff can be just as deadly as getting walloped with a baton.

I,at one time, extradited federal fugitives from CA quite frquently. I cant tell you how many times the CHP would stop us while we were gasing up or taking a piss break and ask for credentials. It would not be enough that there was a big blue tag on the vehicle with cage and strobes all over the place. Just that he saw us in plain clothes escorting someone in leg irons to the Head!!what dickheads! I have never seen so many mustaches in my life!!

I say this for CA....let'er sink!! SINK damnit!!SINK!!

And may Arizona burn up in a fireball from an asteroid hit.

It is illegal to own one period in CA, unless you are a police officer as defined by CA law. You'll notice that many (not all) online places will not ship them to CA. I do own an ASP baton and a hickory baton. My criminal justice professors have told me that unless the cops want to get you for something, they won't bother you about it. Having it in a car is a different story.
