Hey all you Floridians! I am taking a trip this Saturday-Thurs to Marathon in the Keys and was thinking of FedExing myself a handgun in which to carry concealed with my Virginia permit, since it appears we have reciprocity.

The whole family is going, and my parents are leaving this Thursday, so I figured I would send my Kimber overnight to them and have it waiting for me when I get there, rather than have the TSA hassle for the flight. I will put the mags and Ranger T's in a seperate box and mail those too. I can use my company account and get a tremendous discount, so the more I think about it, the more I think it is a good idea. I was originally planning to just be unarmed.

Anyhoo, I just want to confirm with you all the rules for carrying down there. I checked out packing.org, and wanted to get your take on what is considered a place of nuisance? I am guessing that would be the type of place I wouln't go anyway, but I would really like to avoid prison if at all possible. Otherwise it looks like any government or police facility is off limits, along with any place that serves alcohol for sit down consumption (same in VA on that one), airport terminals and schools.

Is there anything else I need to know about carry in FL? I am a little nervous about it because I have never carried in another state besides VA.

Thanks!

big time FL no nos

schools of any kind (of course)
fed/gov't buildings (the usual)

BARS/CLUBS- the law defines such places as any place whose primary source of income is through the sale of alcohol, so the bar at a TGI fridays would be ok, but most bars in the keys would not be a good place to carry

Stadiums and other large venues

and dont pack in the whorehouses......

I think you're misreading the part about bar in 790.06(12).

You can go to TGI Fridays, but you can't go to the BAR at TGIF.

790.06(12) ---- No license issued pursuant to this section shall authorize any person to carry a concealed weapon or firearm into; any portion of an establishment licensed to dispense alcoholic beverages for consumption on the premises, which portion of the establishment is primarily devoted to such purpose;

---------------------

Here's 790.06 in full for Bishop223

(12) No license issued pursuant to this section shall authorize any person to carry a concealed weapon or firearm into any place of nuisance as defined in s. 823.05; any police, sheriff, or highway patrol station; any detention facility, prison, or jail; any courthouse; any courtroom, except that nothing in this section would preclude a judge from carrying a concealed weapon or determining who will carry a concealed weapon in his or her courtroom; any polling place; any meeting of the governing body of a county, public school district, municipality, or special district; any meeting of the Legislature or a committee thereof; any school, college, or professional athletic event not related to firearms; any school administration building; any portion of an establishment licensed to dispense alcoholic beverages for consumption on the premises, which portion of the establishment is primarily devoted to such purpose; any elementary or secondary school facility; any career center; any college or university facility unless the licensee is a registered student, employee, or faculty member of such college or university and the weapon is a stun gun or nonlethal electric weapon or device designed solely for defensive purposes and the weapon does not fire a dart or projectile; inside the passenger terminal and sterile area of any airport, provided that no person shall be prohibited from carrying any legal firearm into the terminal, which firearm is encased for shipment for purposes of checking such firearm as baggage to be lawfully transported on any aircraft; or any place where the carrying of firearms is prohibited by federal law. Any person who willfully violates any provision of this subsection commits a misdemeanor of the second degree, punishable as provided in s. 775.082 or s. 775.083.

It was pre 911 when I last flew with a weapon. But it is lawfull to check a weapon for transport within the cargo hold, and ammo must be purchased at destination. there's some paperwork and an
inspection by counter supervisor to see that weapon is not loaded and I belive a cable lock may
be required now. And of course the TSA lock on luggage. I'am sure there are web sites that give all the info. as well as the air carrier. Good Luck.

I think the airlines mark the case, luggage etc on the outside stating firearm inside.

You have it absolutely wrong on the alcohol. The bar area of any restaurant is off limits. The area devoted to food , like the area outside the fenced in bar area of Outback Steakhouse, is okay. There is no prohibition against larger venues, only sporting events as set forth in the statute.

There is no signage law. Any sign can be safely ignored, if you ever see one. The is no open carry at all.

Feel free to pm me if you have questions. I do a lot of firearms law.

You can carry up to 11 pounds of ammo in your suitcase. You do NOT have to purchase it locally.

I stand corrected. I remember having to not have ammo in suitcase with weapon. Maybe was
carrier rule. It was pre TSA. only guidelines were from FAA.
