Could someone tell me what the clip on the left side of an HK91 forearm is for?

Its purpose is to snap off and make you look like a dufuss when you try to hook up your sling as pictured...

Out of three HK91's, I've never had one come off.

Does the metal break, or does it pull the rivet through?

I think he's saying that the sling will snap-off of the clip at an inopportune moment.

BTW, what is a good 3-pt sling setup for a 91?

When someone figures it out, please let me know. I have tried the setup like Osprey, but it doesn't seem to work well for me...

No, I really mean I had a clip snap off. It broke at the bend and left the rivited stub on the handguard. I drilled out the rivit and now I have a dorky looking square depression left...

From what I've read in Duncan Long's and Gangarosa's Books,
that item was used by German troops to hang their rifles on a nail,
yes... no shit, a nail.

Mine doesn't have that on the CETME black widow. I shot a HK91 and it scuffed me a few times as well. kind of glad to know the cetme doesn't have that. OUCH!!

MP5 or one or two other HK rifles/subs had that same little booby trap too IIRC.

A book could never contain bogus info.

The clip is there by intelligent design.
