I want a .308 and decided to go with an FAL or similar vs. an M1A. Im not that familiar with the weapon and was looking for some inspection advice when looking. I also want to go with the shorter paratrooper barrel vs. the standard. Any reccomendations would be appreciated.

Go here and read everything you can. There are so many varieties of FAL to choose from and things to avoid that you really need to do your research. The exception to that would be if you are going to buy from DSA or one of the well respected FAL builders.
