Got my first Garand ever last night and AI CARUMBA! I'm in love.

Backstory: Like most normal people I live on a budget, which means I can't run out and buy every gun I want on a whim. I've wanted a Garand for years and was finally able to make it happen. I've been a member of the Garand Collectors Club since 2011 and I've had money in my gun "slush fund" earmarked for a Garand ever since then. Problem was, every time I'd have enough cash on hand to purchase the CMP was out of what I wanted, or vice versa, the CMP would have what I wanted but my Garand fund was depleted because of some outside factor -- family emergency/storm damage to the house/major sale on PMags (sometimes I'm my own worst enemy ).

Long story short, two weeks ago I saw that the CMP recently listed Service Grade Springfields and HRAs for $730. With a little creativity I was able to scrounge up enough dough to finally make this happen. I rounded up all my paperwork/birth cert./etc. and mailed off my application last Wednesday with a sticky asking for original USGI wood if readily available. Monday I got the Don't Bother Us email. Last night FedEx delivered. And... WOW. I couldn't be happier. FedEx delivered, but really, with was the CMP who delivered. Gorgeous!

I'm still an M1 neophyte. So please feel free to chip in with any insights on what I've got. Regardless of what anyone says, I'm thrilled and won't be giving this thing up anytime soon.

I went Garand Collectors Association (GCA) route. You can sign up online and be good to go. If you can, I'd recommend you try to find a local organization and join them. Always good to interact with like minded individuals.

The CMP has a searchable list of their affiliated clubs HERE

And yes! If you can manage, get going on the CMP thing, they're not making any more of these pieces of history!

I was surprised to, but not about to question it either. Mentally I had prepared myself to wait weeks/months.

Nice first M1! She's a mixmaster for sure, but its a really nice shooter with nice finish and a really nice stock. I would be very happy with that rifle! I just got one of the WRA service grades and it is nice but not quite as nice as yours. This rifle makes my 7th M1 and 2nd winchester that I own though. M1's are my favorite rifles to collect. I own 2 Winchesters, 2 springfields, 2 International Harvesters, and 1 Harington and Richardson. They all came from the CMP.

Yep, nice post-war rebuild. Great first M1  -  congrats!

It'll probably make an excellent shooter Garand for basic (JCG-legal) matches, not to mention home defense or SHTF exigencies.

First thing you might consider is immediately upgrading the op rod spring to one from Orion-7. Actually, buying a 5-pack or so would be a good idea if you plan to shoot it a lot. Then stock up on USGI clips, but not the heavily parkerized ones. Those reportedly can cause feeding issues until you knock most of the park off.

Nice rifle for sure!

Heck if you want to ever get rid of that nasty ol Winchester trigger housing I can help you with that with a replacement HRA or SA.

Trust me, your first M1 will immediately cause you to incur the official Raging Boner of Freedom.

If it doesn't, ... you must be on a steady diet of bromide.

I updated my CMP eligibility and I got the "we got your stuff, but don't contact us" email on 8/24.  I got the email, on 8/28, that my order was sent to sales.
I got the email today that my order shipped.  It has been a few years since I ordered from the CMP, but this has been pretty quick.

Thanks everyone, I'm still riding high almost a week later.

The other night while I was looking it over (again) and making "pew/pew/pew/pew/pew/pew/pew/pew/PING!" noises I noticed what might be another identifying mark on the front right side of the stock.

Any of you Garand experts have any insights on whether or not this circular marking means something? It's just bold enough and placed in a location that it seems like it might have been put there on purpose...

Thanks!

Probably a "handling" or "storage" mark.

My Enfield No4 has the perfect imprint of a round headed slotted screw head imprinted into the side of the forearm.
