Is there a way I can remove the handguard of my M1A without having to disassemble the gas system and such?

Yes there is.  You need a punch with a small tip that will fit in the holes in the handguard's clip.  With the punch held in hand, unseat the clip from its perch on the side opposite the op rod, while holding its unseatedness in place.  Then use the punch to reach past the op rod and engage with it the other side of the clip.  Get it unseated, and the rear of the handguard is now free.
