I had this discussion with a few friends and we did not come up with a good enough explanation.
I have owned both and it appeared to me that the felt recoil on the M1A was more than the M1 in 30-06.
Everyone agreed that they felt the same. The best explanation would be the gas system but didn't sit right with everyone.
Anyone notice the difference?

I have a m1a and a m1 garand and i would have to agree that the m1a has more kick than the garand. I actually shoot my garand more.

The M14 is lighter than the M1 but only marginally. I have never really noticed a difference in recoil between the two.
