I left the hole open as it does not bother my hand (probably because the hole sits at the bottom of my palm) and I may want to remove the grip in the future.

You can have a threaded wooden plug made then fit it with the final shaping. Find a woodworker. Add a screwdriver slot for takedown. Or put a cork in it.
