so, was/am considering having my ruger American 3006 threaded for a flash suppressor and maybe an eventual 30cal suppressor..

smithy says it's gonna be a 1/2 x 28 thread and I am not seeing thread protectors or flash suppressors in 30 cal for that thread..

am I thinking this wrong?

I would think it would be 9/16 x 24 or 5/8 x 24
You need a pretty thin barrel for 1/2 x 28
I do have a flash suppressor for my 30 cal Fal Osw that
is 1/2 x 28 Took forever to get an adapter from aac.
They kept sending me .223 ones, would not be good
to send a .30 cal pellet out that hole!

A 3/8" reamer or drill should work fine and not touch the 1/2-28 female threads.

Don't do it. Find a different smith. Thread 5/8 x 24.

Barrel is too thin for 5/8's, so it's normal to do a 1/2X28 then just get a thread adapter.

Please tell us how your magic smith will make a 5/8x24 thread (6.25 OD) when a Ruger American rifle has a barrel diameter at the muzzle of 0.567"  ??

His smith is dead right.  If you want/need 5/8x24 you use an adapter.

OP - have your muzzle device custom cut, or find someone who makes one that you like in 30 cal and 1/2x28, or use an adapter.

Thread protectors are thread protectors.  OP - you will want a pretty thin one since you wont have a lot of shoulder depth.  I highly recommend ones from this guy:

But you will need to ensure your threads aren't longer than the protector width.... and get as thin of one as possible.

I know a few gunsmiths that are *convinced* that when you reduce the diameter of the muzzle end like that for threads, especially on thin barrels as it is.... that you relieve stress in this area and impact the accuracy potential of the barrel.

How long is the barrel? Many sporter profile barrels can be shortened a few inches to give adequate material to thread. This will have a minor impact on muzzle velocity but I have seen accuracy improvement due to the barrel effectively becoming more rigid than it was at it's original length. Shortening the barrel will also see an added benefit when you add a suppressor that is 6" - 9" long. The rifle can become cumbersome in a stand or dense environment with a full length barrel and can installed.

I recommend using a light weight can on sporter barrels.

As far as 30 caliber cans that can accommodate reduced thread pitches there are a few that don't require a secondary thread adapter. The SilencerCo Omega, Harvester, and Hybrid would be a good start. The Omega and Hybrid can also use ASR muzzle brake AC1276 that is threaded 9/16x24 but has a 7.62 bore to handle 30-06.

Why not just buy a Ruger American Predator in 30-06 that is already threaded.  You can find them at $400 at most places and if you jumped on the Cabelas $80 for $100 gift cards, you would only be in  for $320.  compare that to the cost of getting it threaded and buying an adapter when the Predator is already threaded in 5/8.

These guys have adapters as well.  But, I think I would shoot for a 9/16x24.   1/2x28 on a 30-06 is a little scarey at least to me.
