Well, here is what I have so far.  This would be the cheap keep it simple SBR build for me.  I do not like exposed barrels or expensive furniture because my guns get used for hunting and beat to shit, so the less exposed the better.

Currently the gun is a 9.5" .300 BLK barrel from Core15, a spikes piston system, CTR stock, other typical crap, etc.  The custom work is in handguard.  I'm using the muzzlebrake to hold the end cap on the rifle.  Thanks to Adam for taking the time to hand over an AR10 muzzlebrake, I turned it down and machined off the base so I could insert it into a factory muzzle cap and make this work.  I think I have $400 into this gun total, just a whole lot of scrounging, spare parts, and a little help from my friends.

the idea was to also keep it light, it ended up being just over 5lbs, which was quite a bit heavier than I wanted, but the .300 barrel has a heavy profile which sucked up all the weight savings I had been working for.

Nice, I'm also thinking about trying out that barrel. Will it function with A can and subs?

Including the $200 for the stamp?

Looks good, with the proximity of the handguard to the muzzle, any concerns with heat and possibly melting the ends of it?

Oops, make that $600 including the tax stamp.  It's been nearly a year since I paid it I completely forgot.

How do you like the 9.5" core 15 barrel?  It's what I'm planning on buying.

Honestly I have not shot it enough yet, but it seems to do just fine.  It is a heavy profile though.

How in the world did you get a piston system to work on that?  Does Spikes make piston systems or is that a typo?

Adams arms made their low profile versions for Spikes a few years back, I got ahold of one of them.  They are a flush curved profile instead of the standard pincatinny, allowing them to fit under a standard handguard.

Awesome. Does it run? No one has gotten a 300 BLK piston gun to work in the AR platform it seems.

Incorrect....

PWS makes a piston 300 BLK SBR

I doubt they'd sell it if it didn't work as intended

Nope, doesn't work worth a damn.  :)

I'm pulling it off and doing DI, I'll put the piston on my 7.5" .223.

It MIGHT work if you drilled the barrel and the gas block out something fierce, but I'm just not willing to potentially ruin an expensive system for the purposes of testing.

I removed all the weight from the buffer, then I cut coils on the spring.  As I suspected it never even got to the point where it was ejecting before it failed to chamber.  The amount of pressure .300BLK generates is just pathetic.  Even when I was loading very hot charges I couldn't get it to work.  Like I said earlier, it MIGHT work if you bore out the gas port and the piston block, but I quit there.

Well, I ended up converting it to DI after a long affair with failure trying to get the piston to run.  I may revisit it again though.

Here's a video of it shooting from this last weekend.  It's fun and with 147gr @ 1900fps it's pretty rowdy.

How did you like the Core15 barrell? And how did you get it at a great price? They sell for quite a bit now

It looks like they have gone up since I bought one, but not by that much.  I pretty much had all the rest of the parts for the rifle from either trades or other means.  The only thing I paid for on my rifle was the pistol grip and the barrel, so that's why my cost was low.

As for the barrel I have had time to break it in.  I fired a .34" group of 5 rounds standing at 50 yards with a micro dot.  That's pretty incredible in my opinion.  I have yet to fire it at 100 yards seeing as I plan on using it for hunting within 50 yards in brush, but I suspect it will group very well.  Overall I'm happy with the barrel - I do wish it was a lighter profile - but then again the heavy profile does appear to accomplish something.
