I'm thinking about getting another 1873 and I'm interested in 44-40, but I can't decide what barrel length. I won't be doing any CAS with it. Just range fun.

I have no desire to go down the 357 Magnum road again.

I would go for capacity if I was going to do a 44-40. I always thought the 24 inch rifles looked cool.

Just for range fun, I'll second the motion for the 24". If you're not hunting, the extra length is no big deal and the capacity would be nice.

What turned you off .357?

Here is my saga. Maybe it ultimately had nothing to do with the caliber, but I'd rather stay with something that operates at a lower pressure.

Go 44-40 for sure. 45 colt and 357 were never made in real '73 rifles but are today. I love the 44-40 and it is a straightforward cartridge to reload although it does have to be loaded carefully. It is a very thin case and is slightly more tedious to load than 45 colt, although it's not difficult by any means.

I would personally go with the 24" octagon barrel straight stock. These seem to have been a very common variation in real winchesters.
