I picked up a JM Marlin 336 30-30 Texan in a pawn shop a year or two ago for $250.  Hadn't really done anything with it, because I couldn't decide whether I wanted it scoped or unscoped.  Never could commit to one or the other, until I recently figured out my workaround.

For this deer season, I am trying a Weaver rail on the receiver, with some Weaver quick-detach rings, and my Weaver 1-3x20mm Classic V scope.

I really like this setup.  Now I should be able to hunt with a 3x scope in the woods, and with the QD rings, remove the scope and shoot iron sights whenever I want and the scope should (hopefully) return to zero when remounted.

I love the feel of this Texan and the little Weaver scope doesn't hardly weigh anything or offset the balance.

That's a good looking set up.  Don't forget to tape down the saddle ring.

I made that mistake once, deer heard it whoosh off he went.

I decided to go with a scope on my lever gun, too.

In before the clowns that say you shouldn't scope a lever gun.

Looks good OP, I had that same scope on a Marlin .44 magnum and nearly blacked my eye once.  Not a lot of eye relief on that one, it is on my .357 rifle now.

Yeah I was assuming the crowd here would be against scoping a levergun, but I wanted a little help at dusk & dawn at 100 yds. I like the fact that I can detach the scope at any point and hunt with irons if I want.  Although with the scope set to 1x, there probably isn't a reason to take it off other than the weight difference.

I like a scope as low as I can get it on a levergun.

All my leverguns run optics. The FX2 2.5X and VX3 1.5-5X are my favorites.

I had a forward mounted scope on my Rossi 92 in 45 Colt. Took it off last week and replaced it with a Burris FF3. The only shot I took with it scoped was at 1.5X and it was at like 20yds. I liked the idea of the scope, but I primarily hunt from the ground in the brush and woods during gun season. The forward mounted scope just messed with the balance and ended up being more of a hindrance than it was worth.

Might have been a different story if I could have mounted over the receiver.

I went over/under for those close up shots.

So far I only have this and my 1895 scoped. The 1895 wears a Leopold FX-II 2.5x.

My 1894c 357 and my Western Field have buckhorn sights, and my 1894 41 mag has a Williams receiver sight on it.

What kind of reticle does that Weaver 1-3x20 use? I'm considering one for my Glenfield 30.

Just a standard duplex (Weaver calls it "dual-x"). It's a good old-school scope.

My Marlin 1894S also in .41 wears a Williams receiver sight however thinking as my eye sight is getting worse to scope it.  Got a short 3x scope if I go that route.

'71 Marlin 336 with a peep sight and Vortex 2-7 Scout and a Glenfield with a peep sight and Vortex Sparc II. Had them both loaded up and ready to go to the range so my daughters could sight them in for deer season. Started raining at 0400....still raining at 1200. We'll try again next week.

I like shooting my leverguns with peep sights but also want the benefits of a scope. Not sold yet on the levergun red dot, but I had it and decided to try it.

Of my 8 leverguns, 2 are scoped.  My 1949 Savage 99 and my 1959 Winchester 88 are ready for longer rang while the rest use irons of some kind. I say, to each his own and just because I do or don't use something myself, nothing wrong with someone taking another approach.

The Weaver 1-3X Classic is a great scope for the price and very appropriate on a 336.  I put one on my 336BL.
