One of my projects I have laid out for myself before the end of the year is an EBR lever action.

Which would be a better base to start with. I want to do Synthetic Furniture (Or I may just sand down the wood/checkering, fill with an epoxy top laying, sand smooth and gun kote), and an optic rail with a mini red.

XS has a full length top rail that will fit the Marlin and the barrel clamp style that will fit the 94, but which would be a better base. I am looking for a used base gun (only one shop I've gone too has had anything, 2  Winchesters for $500 I believe) and Marlins seem to be cheaper on the used market.

I am hoping for a 16", but a 20" will work as well.

Thanks.

+1

A Marlin would be a much better project gun anyway!

Agreed, it would be easier to do on a Marlin.

I too agree, Leave the Winchesters as they are. Marlin is the way to go for a project gun.

You might investigate the Mossberg 464. Its a copy of the Winchester, I have a 1976 model 94 and love it. It is thinner and lighter than the Marlin, but the Marlin is a better rifle for several reasons,, one being able to pull the bolt. I have had both and accuracy seems to be about the same. Enjoy your project

Any Wal Mart that still sells guns will have one (maybe),  plus places like Academy Sporting Goods (or Big 5 or  Dick's,  etc.)  , Bass Pro Shop, Cabela's ––- all should have new Marlins for less than $400

If its based on a big bore lever action just don't tell me... I'm already looking at something in 45/70 or .444 marlin as it is.

I've already got a .444 with a bayonet hanging off of it...my 45-70 just may look like another EBM.

Oh shit I told you.

damn it.. your killing me here. I'm never going to get my SBR Ak rolling if these side projects keep showing up.

Now Phil, did you ever get a cowitness with a micro red dot (I was thinking of using TNVC RDP II) with the XS sights (Say shimming or completely new base) for  the front sight and using the high weaver style rear on the Flat top for the Marlin?

I seem to remember that the sights were to low.

The Marlin 336 is a better rifle.

Yeahhhhhhhh, never got anything to co-witness and it was the main reason why I ended up ditching the Burris Fastfire.   I'll stick with the XS sights anyway, it's a good sight set.  I have a set of Brockman's on my M444 and as pricey as they are, I'm probably going to get another set for the 45-70.

Sweet, post 30-30.

I may just stick a mini red dot on a QD mount with the normal sights. If it fails, just rip it off real quick .
