You could always do a pinhole camera. They only measure about 1 in square. We used to put them in smoke detectors when I worked at walmart back in college. We'd put them in back stockrooms and catch employees stealing.

Raspberry Pi Zero W with the add on camera. I've loaded one with free webcam software and connected it to blueiris. It also has standalone motion detection capability.
Extension cables are available to allow you to put the camera out farther. I'm thinking about building one into a wall clock face. |

true 5MP imager and they are tiny at 4" (total across the bezel). The dome is only 2". |
