so i was reading the FFL newsletter that came out today and followed a link to a story and another link to the ATF "finding" on electronic A and D books.  It looks to me that you can now use Excel and just make notes about errors or updates and so you don't have to use the "error tracking" type software.  Anybody else read it that way?

Yes. Since April of last year when 2016-1 came out, it has been official that Excel spreadsheets are allowed.  Just make sure that you're following section 2c of the ruling regarding spreadsheets (where Excel is referenced by name)

This, from 2016-1:

If a spreadsheet program (e.g., excel) is being utilized, the system must be able to track any edits/corrections/amendments in a “notes” column. Any edits/corrections/amendments may overwrite the original entry so long as the “notes” column explains any edits/corrections/amendments and/or tracked changes (i.e., what was changed, who made the change, and why the change was needed).
