Good Morning,

I just received a pack of 62gr Federal Fusion's from RMR that I plan on using for some short range deer hunting next month.

Can anyone share their experiences using this bullet?

I am looking to use 1x LC cases, Ramshot TAC and either CCI 450 or Tula SRM primers.

I was thinking at starting around 23.5 gr of TAC seated to the cannelure. This will be fired out of a 16" Midlength 5.56 upper.

Thanks

Bullet weight?

For those of us who don't automatically know.

Work up, but I think I used 25 gr as my final load with 2.25 OAL and Rem 7 1/2 primers.

I am going to spend some time this winter working up some loads with XBR 8208. I never could get accuracy better than 1.5" with TAC.

First of all, you need to know what caliber you rifle is chambered for as the load data for a .223 vs 5.56 or Wylde is different.  I use Ramshot's TAC and Remington 7½ primers in Win brass with my Hornady 68grn HPBT bullets (a great combination in my 1:9 RRA A4 for shooting at apples at 400+ yds) and the max load for a 5.56 or Wylde chambered rifle (I have a Wylde) is 26.0grns for that bullet vs only 24.4grns for that same bullet in a .223 chambered rifle.

While Ramshot doesn't give load data for the OP's specific bullet, for a Mil 855, 62grn bullet they show 26.2grns as max for a 5.56 or Wylde chambered rifle but only 25.0grns for a .223 chambered rifle.

BTW, you can download a copy of Western Powders (Alliant & Ramshot) Load Manual V6.0 2016 HERE if you want a copy for your handloading library.

It's a 5.56 upper from PSA, 16" mid length.

I worked some up  a year ago with H335.  Right around 24.5gr at mag length worked great for me.  Didn't hunt with it but that was as fast as I could go with pressure signs or accuracy degradation.   In my 1:7 and 1:8 barrels it shot 1.5 MOA.

26.2 CFE223 is what I use. Or 25.5gr TAC for a full power 5.56 load.

I've run 25 to 26.5 tac. Work up. Had accuracy around 26 gr. There's an archived thread where I posted some results (maybe with the very similar 64 gold dot) several years ago.

I have been happy with 24.7 grains of H335 with these 62 grain Fusions

Sorry I can't help with data but can assure you that the 62gr Fusion works very well on Whitetail deer here in WV. I know a few guys who use them in their factory loaded form.

I use 26grs of tac with a bullet of the same weight, but a fmj.

OP:  fusion is an ELECTROPLATED bullet.

It is not an FMJ, nor a coated bullet.  It falls between the two (but much closer to the FMJ).

Chances are: you will need slightly less powder to get to the same velocity as a true FMJ.

In any event, carefully work up a load using a chronograph and watching for pressure signs of course.

Electroplated bullets from Federal Fusion & Speer are accurate, high-quality bullets.

Well I think I found a winner.

LC 15 Brass
CCI 450
26.1GR TAC WARNING : .1GR under max published 5.56 data from Ramshot.  Workup and do not use in .223 only chambered rifles.
2.25" OAL

Produced a .55" 5rd group at 50 yards.  Used my Vortex Strike Eagle at 6x.

Going to load up some more and zero my rifle and hopefully bag a deer in a couple weeks.

Concur! I dropped two, here in Mason Co last year. Neither went far at all.

Last I checked there is no such "cartridge as 223 Wylde", in reality the 223 Wylde is a chamber reamer design. Bill Wylde's design was intended to enhance accuracy potential with heavier weight bullets.  Nothing more nothing less.  But some people are not able to discern the difference.  But boy do Keyboard Cowboys, Gunshop staff, etc sure like extol the virtues with baffling people with BS.
Chamber designs

There are however two distinct cartridges in the 223 Remington and the 5.56x45.
As shown in this pdf

The biggest operational difference in the 223 and 5.56 is the pressure to which they are loaded to.
SAAMI Index

Speer (Vista Outdoors) and Federal (Vista Outdoors) have been making plated bullets for years.  Their TMJ bullets are one example, and they are a quality bullet.   Exceeding plated bullets from Berry's Xtreme etc.
Fusion bullets are quality bullets, only on the market via pull down ammo.  They are not sold as a reloading component.

The consensus is these are Fusions and are not pulls.

I settled on 24.5 gr H335 for 64 gr gold dots as well. I tried TAC, but accuracy was terrible

Just loaded some of those. Will leave the chrono at home and just shoot for groups. 2900 is quite good.

26.2 CFE223 only got me 2700.
