<edit> trying to not lock this thread. Post "where to find" questions in the tacked "where to find" thread at the top of the page. dryflash3 .224 bullets for reloading and wondering if Wolf 55gr are OK for reloading and will be for target and critter hunting.

I'm very curious to see this answered as well. I've been about to pull the trigger on buying some of these for a few days due to the low prices but I've held off because I'm afraid of the unknown.
|
|
Haven't seen a post yet of someone who has reported shooting them.
If I was in the market, I would compare the price of the Wolf to Hornady's FMJ. Because you can't get a better 55 gr FMJ than a Hornady. So price would have to be way cheaper than a Hornady for me to try them. |
|
Tag for a result. If I could find a batch of 100 to test out I would fo without hesitation. Even still, 6cpr is tempting even at 1k.
|
|
|
Hornady can be had for about 8.5 cents a piece. How much cheaper do you need to go?
|
|
I pulled the trigger on the Wolf bulk pack. 4k for $221 delivered to my door. Bullets come in a nice heavy plastic bag, packaged 1k to a bag in a nice heavy box, packaged in a bulk pack of 4k. Nice clean packaging. Bullets look great with consistent cannulure, high polish and neat clean jacketing with the exposed lead core at the base. For the price it was hard to beat. Hornady's are at 8.5c/ bullet as mentioned before, with these I paid 5.5c delivered, so there was a small savings.
I wont get a chance to shoot them for a few weeks, but I'm sure they will make great range ammo. |

Can You post a pic or two, tempted to pick up one box for blasting.

I usually get bulk Hornady 55gr for 7cpr on average... for plinking I'd try these Wolf projectiles at 5.5 cpr or less. Off to search :)
ETA: My google fu is failing...not finding these. ETA2: Aha! Found 'em! |
|
Please don't turn this into a "where to find" thread. We have a tacked thread for that.
|

Thanks to dragon for posting the pictures. For the pricing I don't think these are a bad buy. Time will tell when I have a chance to load and shoot them. For plinking the price is right especially when the hornady bulk packs are over $425 per 6k and this was just under $225 delivered for 4k.
I'm pretty sure these are the same bullet in the Wolf Gold 55gr .223 ammo that is so popular. If so then they are a great buy for sure. Off to find more to stock away! |
|
They look really good for the price, I'm thinking I might try some It would like a update on them to see if it is worth it.

what happens when you put a magnet to the wolf 55gr ?
does it stick, or are they real copper jackets ? thanks |

Well, at 3¢ difference between Wolf and Hornady, you're looking at a $120 savings on 4000 rounds. I guess I'll find out if it's worth it. Just ordered 4K. View Quote View All Quotes View All Quotes Quoted:

The ogive's look kind of uneven on the Wolf bullets. I would guess you will wind up with a .005"-.010" variance in OAL.
Generally you see this when bullets from multiple presses are put in the same box. Hornady bulk bullets are all from 1 lot on 1 press so are very consistent in my experience. |

I couldn't pass it up at that price. I got my 4000. I guess this is fairly new on the market, as it doesn't appear that anyone has posted any results yet. And thanks for the PromoCode

My 4K arrived on Thursday, I loaded up 200 to shoot Christmas day (did not get to shoot them all)....
My 4k looked great, seemed pretty consistent on weight and length based on some random samples. I seated almost to the top of the cannelure which had an OAL of 2.240" +/- .005 (could be due to brass variances as well since all mixed headstamp). The few I shot Friday seemed fine. Was just plinking at the family cabin in between rain showers. I hope to get out tomorrow and fire the rest at the range (just using my 16" carbine, not 18" target rifle) but for a cheap plinking bullet so far I am satisfied. If I didn't need/want to buy some other things I would grab at least another 4k of these (and still may...). |

I hope someone shoots some groups with these, if they can hang with hornady fmj's, i want.

Watching with great interest as this may be a another buy cheap and stack deep item for my stash.
Interested to see what the COAL is with the cannalure landing center on a 1.750 trimmed case. |

Just ordered 4k.
Thanks alot for the heads up on these.Reloading for 3 people shooting 3 gun, any money savings is fantastic. |

From my 16" carbine with a PA 1-4x scope, shooting offhand at 100 yards I had no problems staying in the center of a paper plate with this. So far every bit as good as the Hornady FMJs I have shot out here in the same conditions.
At 300 yards on a silhouette, aiming the the neck was dropping nicely into center mass. I'm pleased and will probably put another 4k on the credit card... |
|
It sounds like I might be grabbing 4k also. Thanks to everyone so far for the info. I look forward to reading further reviews.

Just ordered some. Are you using Hornady load data for these?

I hope these are still around next month when I get my bonus from work...

Quoted: So I got a chance to try these on paper today. No gun-specific load development - Just a few loads I'd worked up with some other bullets in this weight previously. All shots were fired at 100 yards, through a chronograph. I was shooting a 23" T/C Contender (1:12 twist) with a Bowers MOUT suppressor, a 16" Bushmaster (1:9 twist), and a 10.5" Aero Precision (1:7 twist). All were loaded on a Dillon 650. Mixed headstamp brass was run through the Dillon trimmer prior to loading. I was using CCI #41 primers, which the Contender appears to not like. I had several fail to ignite in this rifle. Powders used were what I had on hand: H-322, IMR-4895, and AA 2230-C. The H-322 and 2230-C charges were thrown on the Dillon. I would weigh the first 5 or 6 and then just go with the rest. Since IMR stick powders don't go through a powder measure worth a darn, I threw these manually and trickled the last bit for a hand-weighed charge for each round. Not surprisingly, the 4895 showed the best accuracy potential. I could try hand-weighing each round with the other powders to get a better idea of their accuracy potential. For that matter, I could sort cases by headstamp. But since these are for "plinking" rounds, I'm going with "plinking" setup / prep. I wasn't all that surprised when the Contender turned in the best results. It likes 55 gr. bullets, and it's got a 3-9X scope. 9X was great for the little 1" dots I was aiming at. The ARs had a 1-4x and a 1-3x scope. Even fine crosshairs covered the little dots at 100 yards. I expect I can do better with a regular bullseye target. Both ARs shot in the 2.5" to 4" range with the Wolf bullets. The Contender shot 1.12" to 2.5" groups. None of the groups had a consistent number of rounds because of all of the hard primers that rifle didn't want to ignite. I had a nice 5/8" group going with the 4895 load, and then the last shot opened it up to 1.25". But I think we can at least say the bullets have potential. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v632/GarrettJ/Reloading/BF16251A-AE95-4F5C-A5A1-3A1421FAF216_zpsjvhdnjtj.jpg View Quote for the cheapest bullet around, that is great!! I used to go to a lot of MG shoots, so I would load the cheapest I could get. If it was minute of flaming mini van I was good |

I think I'm going to buy some of these. The XMAS10 code expired on the 27th.
Anyone have a different code? Thanks! |

I didn't realize they had such good prices on the Wolf primers.
Needless to say, I am now fully stocked and ready for the storm. Picked up a few things at Midway, and Amazon. Primers, bullets, brass, tools and dies, good to go. |
|
With the price I have previously found 55gr FMJBT w/C from Hornady I haven't been to interested. But then I haven't seen Wolf projectiles for sale either. Also I question their quality, the Hornady is cheap and consistent. I have weighed a hand full their 55gr and all were within .2gr most that weren't dead on were .1gr +/- (majority was dead on). And they measured pretty consistently with the mic.
I haven't seen any ballistics tests with them, I'm sure someone has done it. I'd like to know if there jacket is thin enough from a 20" rifle at 100 yards to consistently brake at the cannelure and fragment. |

Key is to order as much as possible to defer the cost. I actually over did it alittle bit, but I'm set for small rifle, pistol primers for a good long time now. Threw in some large rifle, and pistol as well. By casting, brass hounding as much as I do, I should be set for the election years. |
