Straightened up the loading bench
Repaired my scale (battery wire broke)
Loaded my first 50 AE ammo--just 20 rounds using 4 different loads of H110 under a Speer 300 gr TMJ.

Factory load on the left.  Mine on right and in the box.

Have been slowly processing close to 8000 pieces of the ugliest brass I've ever seen. I don't use pins with my plinking brass and they are turning out very nice with Meguiars Wash and Wax and a pinch of Lemi Shine. Nicest day all year and was able to skip the drying trays and sun dry a couple batches of cases.

Felled a tree, milled it down with the chainsaw and the table saw and made a stand for my new steel target.

Then, I made some brass shooting at it. Lol.

I knocked over a tray of .38 brass while moving my mini-shop vac from beside my bench.  This required me to recover all 44 of the cases that fell out of the tray of 50, then figure out why they were sitting in an uncovered tray instead of being all snug in a labeled container.  I'm still working on that last part.

I needed the vacuum to start measuring the hose ID and OD.  Then I started researching PVC fittings that a 1.25" shop vac hose will interface with.  Pro tip: that hose ain't really 1.25" in diameter, either inside or outside, making the research more challenging.  I'd known that fact, but I needed the actual dimensions to start figuring out what pipe sizes to investigate.  (And offline hints on where to look for the fittings would be GREATLY appreciated.)

Why these fittings?  Chip collection for my HF mini chop saw for my next bout of .223-to-300 Blackout brass conversion.  Using that saw without a decent chip management scheme has left me with plenty of clean up work, policing brass chips (and cut off case necks) all over the room.

I'm also 90% settled on a chip/dust separator system to use with this.  A cyclone-type separator should do the trick, and they are no longer as expensive as they used to be.

Edit to update: The brass was GI .38 Special (WCC 86 mostly) that I’d decrimped and loaded a LONG time ago (some time in the 1990s I think).  In my latest .38 loading project, I decided that they weren’t as decrimped as I wanted, as nowadays I have better tools and an actual gauge to check pockets with.  So I’d reamed these cases and they sat in a tray because something shiny caught my eye...  At least my poor brass processing discipline is getting better - I remembered what they were, and now I have them properly put up and labeled.

It looks like my best bet is some sort of hubless connector between PVC and shop vac connections.  The pluses are that these are size-forgiving and also help isolate vibration.  And since the mini vac has the smaller type of vac hose, there are far fewer purpose-made adapters for this than the larger hose.

Long time,,,,,,,, no reloading for me. Lots of time on my plate now.

I am getting my new (as of Christmas) T7 press and new rcbs 1500
scale ready. I got the dies for 357 in and adjusted. 4 more calibers to go. I have an extra turret head, and will buy more as needed.

Cleaned/organized the bench.

Sized and wet tumbled 50 LC5.56 cases.

Tomorrow will load them up with 68gr Hornady BTHP.

Curious to see how they do compared to 69gr SMK's.

I loaded 100rds of 77gr SMKs, and 50rds of 75gr Speer over 24.2gr Varget...but spent most of the time fighting with the powder measure on the 550.

I'm interested in seeing how the 75gr bullets shoot, I picked up 2k recently from RMR...I need to load some with TAC, a lot easier (and cheaper) than loading with Varget.

Just made more 9mm brass. Tried to find all the brass we shot, but you have to give offerings to the brass gods.

I also milled some planks from some trees on my property to use as a reloading bench upgrade. I need more bench space.

Been having feed issues with my 9mm rounds, of all things. Readjusted the sizing die and the bullet seating die, got out to the private outdoor range with a friend today. I had 0 issues with the newly loaded rounds. Thrilled, because I really like these Blue Bullets but they have to be seated pretty deep for my M&Ps apparently. It's been an ongoing issue for longer than I'll admit.

Re: My order from Powder Valley

Delivery Scheduled for: Monday, 2020-06-01

Not too shabby!

HAZMAT order was shipped just 2 days from receipt of order.

Status is now "IT" (in transit) with only 7 days total to a (promised) delivery on Monday.

I am really looking forward to getting these items, as they may offer me something new in terms of both safety and cartridge performance; something I have wanted for a looong time (20 years) but couldn't be bothered to pursue.

Finally my local club range was open, so this morning I tested handloads in .380, 9mm, .40, .30-30 and .35 Whelen.  Overall a success.  I wish some of the pistol loads were more accurate, but all of these were with new-to-my-pistol bullets, so maybe just the bullet.  In any case I should be able to have reliable, reasonably accurate training loads for each of my main pistol calibers.

I recovered most of my pistol brass and all of my rifle brass.

Years ago I bought some factory 2nd Remington 7mm Mag ammo... It was cheaper than empty brass so I took a chance. It's not very accurate.

So, I've been slowly pulling 20 or 50 at a time as I need them and reclaiming the components.

Today I'm on a roll doing a batch of 50 and by gosh one felt really weird when I pulled it. Out of the last two boxes I had, 19 of them were 160 gr. Barnes TSX factory loads (Remington branded).

I kept the other 18 intact to shoot and see what happens. They were all supposed to be 150 gr. Core-Lokt.

The Barnes definitely used a different powder too... Glad I didn't dump it into my reclamation container that I eventually plan on using!

Weird.

Went up road and walk a new fella through set up for handloading, and explain basics

Poor fella bought a LEE 5 hole press with rotating shell plate, a LEE 4 die set,, and need help to set up..  what a test of patience that press is,, very chunky in it handle operation,, with me being a DILLON owner.. Only real issue I found is I couldnt seem to get case fully sized to completely lay flat in my gauge, no feel for cam over

Got him started,, he need to buy few tools yet, chamfer tool,, good scale,, caliper with 3 place after decimal

I spent time researching where to buy a Dillon XL 750, preferably with almost all the bells and whistles, like the case feeder, powder check, and so on.  I don't need all of Dillon's accessories - I have an Inline Fab Ultramount, so I don't need the Strong Mount; I like to have my tools handy but not on the press itself and so on...

So far I'm still working on the whole idea.  And Dillon's changed their site so instead of the site walking you through adding options, it seems to make you go pick them and add them to the cart separately.  Bummer.  And worse, it looks like many web vendors that sell Dillon's stuff are out of stock on a lot of things.  So I have to be happy with planning.

Just general clean up of the reloading "shop" today.

Man!

It is absolutely amazing/mind boggling the amount of stuff I have accumulated over the years.

The weather is supposed to be nice here Sunday and Monday, so I am hoping to work on that other cabinet.  I think it only came with one shelf.

Here is the first one I bought:

I also sent am email to MAMBA reloading.  They are from Africa.  I was asking if they ship their concentricity gauge to the United States.

I stumbled across their video at oh dark thirty this morning:

MAMBA concentricity (Runout) device

I thought the 5 button digital indicator by InSize was neat.

Hit the one button for min runout.

Hit the button twice for max runout.

Three times gives you the "T.I.P."  which is the difference between max and min.

Butttt...I had previously asked YouTube-er F-Class John about putting up a concentricity gauge video.

He posted this:

How I check runout concentricity using my Accuracy One Concentricity Gauge

He makes it seem like runout is no big deal.

It is a Wright Line (by Eaton) optimedia cabinet.

But I bought it from a surplus furniture store.

They get in furniture from the local Air Force Base.

I shoot a fair amount of 20 ga. skeet loads.  I've been tinkering with my 20 ga loader trying to fine tune it a bit.  Its close, but its still not quite right.  The loader started out life as a ponsness warren 950 elite (12 ga).  Someone had badly screwed it up so I rebuilt it, updated the shot and powder system, retimed it, and made a .410 loader out of it.  About a year ago I swapped out the tooling and made it a dedicated 20 ga. machine (I have a pw 800+ that I swap back and forth between .410 and 28.)

Having a bit of trouble getting the crimps dialed in.  They are just a bit dished and the shoulder is not very well defined.  Crimp depth is fine at about 0.050.  Powder drop is good (16.2 gr. Universal), rem rxp wads, rem sts hulls, shot drop is about 0.850 oz, I may need to open up the bushing slightly, but its only off by about 12-15 pieces of #9 shot.  It seems like stack height is off, but it shouldn't be with that load.  I don't think I'm crushing the wad, I turned the wad ram down until it seemed to just seat the wad on the powder.  I may need to fiddle with the wad seating some more though just to be sure.

Nothing much today.

Went to my club for breakfast, brought along a 22 rifle and a couple of 22 revolvers to shoot.

While at the range looked in the brass bucket and there was about 150 pieces of 38 spl and about 100 357. Both types were nice clean once fired factory stuff so I grabbed it up .

The sick thing is I likely have 10000 pieces of 38spl and 4 or 5 thousand pieces of 357. I could likely never pick up another piece of brass
and still never run out of anything.  Brass scrounging is a sickness

Empty cat litter bulk containers seem like a good way to keep my dry tumbling media organized.

I also cut a gallon jug in half to make a DIY funnel for pouring the media back into the respective container.  So far it’s quick and easy with no major spillage.

Loaded then unloaded some .308" Trophy Bond Bear Tipped bullets over a couple powders.

Going to probably end up using Varget because it's the king of accuracy with bullets in the 168 range as usual.

4166 gave good velocity but had issues with velocity spiking (and throwing one high - multiple groups same thing...). 8208 had good velocity too but the groups were a bit on the big side which seems to be par for the course when loading 165/168's with heavier charges. With a light charges it has produced some of the best groups I've ever shot.

Got to make some empty brass. Finally shot a 223 work up that I loaded back in February using Hornady 75gr HP and Hodgdon H322. Then just plinked for a couple of hours shooting clays on a berm. Washing all that brass now.
