I dug out a box of mixed (commercial and GI) .30 Carbine brass to start figuring out what my trim length was going to be.

Yes, .30 Carbine brass grows, and sometimes a lot, so trimming is important.  Advice from the CMP forums is to trim all of it to 1.280”, but I wanted to know if that was “really needed”.  Yes, it is.

I went through this box of about 200 cases I’d cleaned but not done anything with yet and just measured the lengths.  I got everything between 1.281” through 1.291” lengths.  Clearly these cases aren’t going to be consistent in any way if I don’t trim them after I size them.  I’m going with the recommended (and SAAMI minimum) 1.280” trim length with these.

Next up, setting up the Giraud to trim “straight” cases.  I can do it, but there’s a couple of tricks involved.

Added four more Milwaukee work bench/tool boxes to give me a 10’ x 4’ wide work area. Each unit weighs in at around 400-450 pounds empty. I ordered a US made Wilton vice to mount to the top of one of them. I left the wheels off to keep the work surface low and stable. I moved the original two closer together and remove their wheels.

Loaded a couple hundred 223, finished trimming a large maxwell house(red)plastic coffee can then opened the first of two large flat rate boxes, revealing more 223(some 1X).

I'm dry tumbling some brass that had been wet tumbled. I just read about doing this as a way to dry it(cause it's not going to fucking happen with all the rain we're getting now). If this is a backwards step please tell me!

While I'd like to load something I'll actually shoot I HAVE to deprime some of the cases in the new box so I'll have a full load to run through the wet tumbler.

I almost bought a pound of powder to get back into 10mm loading until it dawned on me I have no idea where my stash of new star line brass is!

I got the coarse adjustment done on my case trimmer, but I couldn’t run any cases through it today.  I have a bunch of .30 carbine cases separated out as “sacrificial” for getting the length exactly right, but I just ran out of time with the other stuff I had to do today.

On the other hand, it’s pretty much all set up except for getting that last 0.001” or so dialed in.  After that, my trimming should go pretty quickly.  I hope so, I have over 2,000 cases to trim!

I got my trimmer dialed in for my .30 Carbine brass.  The back story is complicated, but I got it working.

Side note: those "belted" goobered up cases that show a distinct ledge near the base of the case?  If it's not even all the way around, it can keep a case from going into a Giraud case holder.  I'd chosen these as "sacrificial" cases for tweaking and testing with because I knew it wouldn't' be a real loss if I misadjusted and made some too short.  Well it turned out that almost as many as I ruined wouldn't go into the case holder...

I'm thinking of writing up this project to share.  Like I said, there's a complicated back story...

Bought a USED, but excellent condition Dillon 550 (a), all set up for 38 Spec/357 with a Carbide die set.
Ok not the A, but it's not a B or C model.  I'm looking at what I have, and kind of searching on-line for an owner's manual.

It's similar to my 650, but different enough.  Someday I'll have questions.

Think I'll just do a temporary mount and try to reload a few rounds as is, before I decide about all the new features of the B & C models.

Took a couple drums of wet tumbled .223 brass out, tossed it into the vibratory/walnut shell media to dry it out and ran it a couple hours.

Sorted out the brass that had been in the vibratory unit and put it in jugs for resizing/trimming.

Been shooting off and on all summer.  I need to get that brass loaded up and ready to go back to the range.  Reloading weather is finally here.

In my case I wasn't just powering through, I was ramming full speed ahead as this batch of 7.62 was supposed to be my brass, reloaded several times. Ooops, the second case turned out to be a Malaysian (MAL 2-86) case and running full steam there wasn't any resistance...snap.  Digging through my brass I found a second MAL case, both have been tossed in the recycle bucket.

My no cost replacement pin from Lee Precision arrived today. Decapping die is fixed and I decapped a batch of 7.62 and a bunch of 300BLK, then decapped one 20 count box of Lake City 84. After decapping I swaged the primer pockets on the "new" brass and set aside, then got the other brass in the tumbler.

I did practice going slow, even on known reloaded brass...gotta rebuild that memory so I don't repeat a pin breakage.

Loaded a bunch of 223 on a Lee Classic Turret Press.  Was wondering why my seating depth was wandering all over.   One of the three bolts that hold the top in place was loose and would cause the head to flex when crimping.  Tightened it down and now most rounds are consistent.  I should just load on dillon but these rounds are for more precision shooting and my Dillon powder measure just does not throw AR Comp consistently.

Today I resized and trimmed my 300BLK brass, then swaged the primer pockets on the 20 pieces of once fired LC 84.  Then, I looked in a box and found a bunch of mixed .223/5.56 and decided I should make some new 300BLK brass.  I deprimed and swaged primer pockets, then cut all of the case off at the shoulder on the band saw.  First steps done.

I just finished wet tumbling the new 300BLK blanks and the 20 pieces of LC, they are running in the dryer right now. Later this afternoon/evening I'll anneal the blanks in preparation for forming and trimming.

Loaded 100 22 TCM subsonic loads. 37g cast bullet over 2.4g of unique. Almost as cheap as 22 LR.

Then, I cast up about 40 more of those bullets with a different alloy for a guy on castboolets who is interested in possibly getting the mould.

After all that, I loaded up 80 rounds of 6.5 CM. 50 were 140g Nosler RDF and 30 are reduced recoil loads with some 100g nosler CC.

Pretty good day.

Put up with the most frustrating reloading session ever. Made up 210 rounds of 45 ACP using MB 200gr RN bullets over some True Blue.  Having challenges with the primers getting hung up after decapping and binding the press. Dropped my pin down further and helped a bit but still had the occasional bind. Might have to taper or change the pin out. Will mess around with it tomorrow after some range time. Also had my powder measure sticking in the up position after dropping a charge. Will need to readjust that tomorrow as well.

The frustrating thing was the dies were dialed in when I swapped out to rifle a few years ago and didn't exhibit any of these issues. I was expecting to just drop them in place verify my charge weight and OAL and knock out 1k rounds tonight. That was a bust.

The good thing is I'm digging the Ultramount and Ergo handle from Inline Fabrications. As I mentioned in another post I shouldn't have waited this long to pick those up.

Edited for rounds made, wish it had been 2010.

Sized and primed the clean brass today.  Now running it through the ol vibratory tumbler to clean off the lube.

On wet tumbled brass I usually size and prime in two separate steps, with a dry tumble in between to clean off the lube. Seems like there is less chance of fouling a primer that way.

I finished forming, trimming and dry tumbling my latest batch of new 300BLK brass.  I plan to use this batch of brass to work up a couple sub-sonic loads for use with the can I expect to be submitting a Form 4 for soon (of course, it'll still be months before I have the can in hand).

I recently built a .308 dissipator as a general purpose plinking rifle. I have a large amount of Freedom Munitions 147gr ammo that shoots like crap out of it, but some older 168gr CC loads shot pretty decent.

Today I loaded some test rounds using Hornady 150gr FMJ to see if I can get a decently accurate plinking load. I also tumbled another batch of .300BLK cases my shooting buddy scrounged for me, and finally I got all my tubs of brass marked for easier locating of brass.
