For the first time in 25 years I threw the handle on a Press (Lee Breach Lock) .  I resized a few 30-30 cases after giving them some TLC in my new Tumbler.

I did a little reloading using a Lee Loader hand tool  (7X57) back in 2011 and I did the same with some .41 Mag this last spring, but, this is the first time I have used a regular press since fall of 1993. Gulp. Things have changed.

Time to head off and see what the hell is going on with not being able to do Cam-Over with my breach lock press thingy... this is confusing.....

Powder coated the last of my 9mm stash yesterday, and then sized them to .358".

Loaded the last 60 rounds I needed to complete my 9mm replenishment run.

After 1800 rounds, my little Lee turret press was pretty filthy. I cleaned it up and switched over to .223.

I need to do a ton of 9mm bullet casting now that the weather is a bit cooler. Good thing I have plenty of nice clean lead ready to go.

I was waiting for some bullets to come, so I took my Dillon XL650 completely apart for its routine cleaning and lubing, wet tumbled 4 loads of brass, and then cleaned 4 of my handguns and 2 of my rifles.

Sheesh! Just call me "Mr. Clean"!

Whenever I do the XL650 cleaning/lubing, I always watch the two Dillon videos on the subject with my laptop on my bench, even though I pretty much know what to do, it is a good step-by-step guide to follow to make sure I don't miss anything.

Well this time, I created a Word document (including a ton of pictures that I took) that I printed and placed in sheet protectors to put into my reloading binder. Basically, it is a step-by-step disassembly, cleaning and lubing/reassembly document that I can use from now on in case the Russians attack the Internet goes away. You never know when the bombs start falling and I am going to want to clean the press, right???

I'd attach it as a PDF for others to use, but I am not sure how to do that without a site to host the file.

Anyway, it is now time to get everything DIRTY again!!!

Excellent idea, DH.  It's also easier to turn back a page or two to where you need to check something than to skip backward in a video.

Today I have a surprise day off.  My wife and I are going to hike in a nearby state nature area this morning to take advantage of the unseasonably cool weather.

Later today I'm going to set up stuff to hit the range tomorrow - while it's still cool - and get some loads tested.  These are the loads I didn't get to test last month because of bad weather (all the way here in San Antonio) from Harvey.

I'm fiddling with some LED lighting stuff for my Gamma Master Chrony, because the place I'll be shooting has an overhead cover that may interfere with an optical chronograph's operation.  Hopefully I'll be able to clock the loads I'm testing while checking out whether or not my LED trick works and/or helps.

Was too lazy to use Imperial on my 300 Mag cases today so used a generous amount of Dillon lube.

Realized it's just as good.

Patiently awaiting my new Redding Competition dies for the 300. The Lee Collet die just isn't made for progressive use IMO.

Deprimed and wet tumbled
60x .308
50x 9mm
100x 5.56

The 5.56 was a weird acquisition. The guy shooting it was next to me and kept looking at me blasting away with my M1A. I said hi, and he immediately looked at his AR, and started messing with the sight. He continued for a couple hot/cold iterations of watching but then aggressively avoiding eyecontact or conversation. I asked him if he was saving his 5.56, or if I could have his brass and he looks at me and goes "nothatsfinei'llpuckitupmyselfsorry!" Polices up his brass throws it in the bucket at his station, packs his gun up and leaves.

Dumped the brass into my brass bag after I finished up and it was apparent he wasn't coming back.

I got to the range and made empty brass while testing some .40 loads.

I also had a new pistol that needed to be wrung out, so I put 50 rounds through my new-to-me Glock 42.  It was nice!

I didn't get to do all of the testing that I wanted to.  Between the sun (I had the only bay that had no shade), and issues with my brass catcher, I only got two of the 5 sets of loads tested in two hours.  I spent a lot of time bent over looking for my brass...

And it's really interesting how, when you don't want to find other people's brass, that's all you wind up finding.  Not that I came home with less brass than when I left, but I would have liked to have found a few more of my test cases.

bought some .38 Special and .357 Magnum brass from two local indoor ranges.

Found out that the one range limits anything centerfire rifle to strictly the ammo they sell.  They have another range over in St. Louis that somebody snuck in some .223 tracer rounds.  That caused a fire, so now their insurance company limits both ranges centerfire rifle ammo to what they sell....which is PMC.

Soooo...long story short....if I want .223 brass with all the same headstamp that does NOT have a crimped in primer, I now have a source.

Now, I just have to buy the .357/.38 Special conversion kit for the 650 and some dies.

Sorted my ill-gotten brass

Noticed it has a weird square-shaped crimp in the primer povket.

The plot thickens....
Who was this weird mystery brass fairy? Why does his LC brass have a square-ish crimp around the primer pocket?

Guess I gotta go back to the range to see if he reappears!

I have completed the firing of my fist hundred 175gr SMK 308 loads, and decided upon the best zoom per small circle!

46gr RL15, Rem primer, Lapua Brass, and 175gr SMK for a 16.5" heavy bbl suppressed rem700.

Probably could have figured that out in way less ammo, but it was fun anyways.

Set up the presses for some 69gr SMK 556 to begin the science for my AR's.

Whittled down the expander ball in my 7.62x39 die to .309 from .310  and polished it up. The one they sent with the die originally was .3065 which IMO isn't suitable for .310 bullets. The whole point of the Type S die was to work the brass less and reduce runout but I'm not to the point of neck turning yet - so the expander stays.

ETA - Works perfectly BTW, inside neck dimension measures .3085 which is just about right for my liking.

Found an aluminum milk crate to replace a plastic one that failed when filled with .45 ACP.

185 grain SWCs in IMI 5X cases.

Not the large gallon crate but the smaller half gallon crate.

I think UV on the bottom of one side finally damaged the plastic.

I slid a and truck under it and when I levered it back the far side simply failed.

Box after box of 50 rouund  PMI cartons tumbled out.

Shot some 300 mag at near max load with 180 TTSX. My shoulder hurts a bit. There is a big difference in recoil from lighter loads!!

Messed around with different bushings in the neck dies. I think I have reduced runout significantly by going up .002 and only partial neck sizing. We'll see if it makes a difference in the morning hopefully. It's right on the bleeding edge, the neck just kisses the expander on the way down.

Did a bit more testing. Using the "just right" sized neck bushing and only sizing appx. 2/3 of the neck is giving me concentricity indications of .001" average with many barely registering on the gauge. Redding Comp dies are downright amazing. Trying to use a Lee Collet die on the 550 isn't my preference but hey, it was worth a try. The directions on selecting neck bushings are a bit too generic IMO. It seems to me like the only way to truly know which is right is to use one then measure inside neck diameter.

This is with no neck turning, just off the shelf Sig Sauer brass (which is very good from the start but about 1/2 the price of the fancy stuff).

Adjusted my loading procedure for the big case a bit. I switched to a AT550 style powder die and am using the RCBS Chargemaster to get perfectly consistent charges. Unfortunately there will be some deviation when you are dropping a 75 gr. charge of stick powder with a volumetric measure...

I'll be anxiously waiting for the range report on those.

Today we range tested some 69gr BTHP in the 22-6mm AI, and I did a little practice with the 500 and tested a new load in it which didn't go well accuracy wise.

My shooting partner today practiced with his M39 and 150gr deer hunting load. I had him shoot the remaining rounds of a 20 round box that I loaded for him In 2015. He's only fired it twice at deer both were one shot kills and both were over 200 yards. I guess it's great to be young and be able to use open sights. :)

So tonight I processed the 7.62x54R brass and some 500 S&W brass. I'll likely be loading them Sunday afternoon.

I also need to calculate bullet drop of 69gr BTHP Sierra's @ 3600 fps.

Loaded up 60ish .40S&W

Threw half of them into the reject bin bc they passed OAL but failed gauging.
Chamber check in my pistol confirmed they wouldn't work.

Learned a few things (n00b lessons):
1. If you are meeting resistance, you have your dues set wrong. And your seating stem.
2. Chamfer & deburr! Holy hell that makes things go from hot garbage to working in 2 seconds per case. I won't ever skip this step again. When I got my dies setright, I was still getting resistance. I did a control load with one chamfered & deburred, and one without. Night and day difference. Easy lever pull, perfect bullet alignment, uniform seating depth.
3. If you don't use go/no-go gauges, you really should. Get some and learn how to use them. Mine are Hornady, but I've seen them made by some other companies. They're a really solid real-world confirmation for OAL.
4. Not a criticism, but I feel that my powder throws have become very consistent. I'm happy with this, but still does not negate the need to check every 5th throw. Actually since I'm trying a new load and laddering, I measured every throw.

The end result:
.40 S&W 155gr TMJ (FMJ with the tail sealed)
Intended 1100-1200fps
1.125" OAL
7.0, 7.5, 8.0gr Alliant Power Pistol (10rounds per load)
