Ed Brown Bar Stock 10mm, 40S&W extractor, diamond files, dremel and 2X reading glasses. Magnification for this job is neccessary.

First cut is a bevel at bottom, where case rim first makes contact.

You might not run your bevel as high as mine. I prefer a smooth feed with no ka-chunk.

Second cut is to bottom of claw hook.

I deepen top inside of claw to .086. I have seen them done by big name smiths to .072

Bevel is cut to .050 on bottom side.

Next 8 pictures shown are cuts made with dremel. Haven't used files yet. I didn't use a vise to secure either.

Diamond files are used to clean up rough spotes and macro imperfections left by Dremel. Another way of doing this and it looks a lot cleander is to secure in vise and file. That is if you have all day. I wanted to spend no more than an hour with four 10 minute breaks included.

This is a weigand tensioner.

Then I clean everything up with Cratex wheels and Dremel.

Any one want to see it finished ??

1911Smith

I had an issue with 10mm bullet setbacks in some of my reloads in a Dan Wesson CBOB, you suggested it might be caused by the extractor?

That's right... Jitterbug, IM your address and I'll get this extractor out to you.. It's bar stock and it's a prototype of what I believe will solve your problem. I'm not in the business of selling my work so it's free. I don't have a 10mm to test it on, it was bought and tuned for you. smith out.......

Finished extractor brought to you by Moon Pie.

What's been done is the same way I would radius and polish a 9mm or 45 acp extractor. Q&A ??

This is a Weigand tensioner.

Do you also use the Weigand 1911 extractor tension gauge set and a trigger pull gauge?

Yes... I do use Weigand gage and trigger pull gage.... or have. This thread is no where near completion. I'm about to dispell the myth of extractor tension. Browning never needed all that crap...1911s have and are a cottage industry to gunsmiths. A lot of unnecessary gimmicks exist as result.

jitterbug, extractor sent via usps.

I've used (borrowed) a Weigand 1911 extractor tension gauge set in conjunction with a trigger pull gage, but I never thought it was necessary enough to purchase my own.

You don't even want to know how I tuned my extractor

Thanks for the write up. Can always use more knowledge. (Not like any of it sticks anyways)
