I'm not a collector either.
All my knives get used and occasionally abused. I sort knives into roles and buy them based on their roles. Th Valet was a great buy as a gentleman's knife. It has far exceeded that basic role. Same with the GBA. Great gentleman's knife but has excelled as an EDC and even cutting up foods with just minimal maintenance. |

View Quote I saw another Gayle Bradley with M4 on the EE recently that had some light corrosion going on, which just makes me all the more hesitant. I am usually pretty particular with my stuff, but I can just see that one time I don't get to wipe it down as well as I would like... I think my issue is I just need to come to terms with the fact that over time it will develop its own patina which may include some corrosion. I accepted that before getting my Opinel, but it was also $10. Still doesn't have any corrosion. But I guess I am not using it regularly either. Is Knifeworks.com GTG? I have only really used bladehq and bladeops before. Looks like knifeworks is the only one with the GBA. Aside from the yahoos on ebay with jacked up prices. |

Thanks.
GBA has been in the cart a few times now. I like it, just can't seem to pull the trigger yet. I should, doesn't look like it would be any issue reselling if I find it isn't for me. |

Got the Valet today.
Out of the box, play front to back in the open position. Is that normal on the Axis lock? I didn't experience that on any of the Benchmades I have handled at the stores. Wondering if I need to exchange it right away. |
|
Should be no play in the locked open position. Check if the pivot screw needs tightening, otherwise exchange.
|
|
Thanks.
I looked at that. It is already a little tight side to side, no play. Bit stiff. Only have play front to back Almost seems like the lock area of the blade wasn't machined right. Guess it needs to go back. |

Thanks. All super clean. Kinda bummed. I was really looking forward to it.
On the other hand my urban trapper petite came yesterday, earlier than expected. Really pleased with the petite. Even better than the regular size. About perfect for what I was looking for. GBA on its way too. |

Which one did you get, titanium (no scales), Carbon fiber, or G10? I was thinking G-10 to match the full size UT and for tuxedo effect, but I found a good price and decided to try the titanium. The flipper jimping does not seem quite as aggressive, or perhaps the detent isn't quite as stiff, the frame lock cutout seems a little better than the full size UT and it is just as smooth opening and closing. Nice flat sides for pocket carry. In fact the knife is so thin and the clip is so compact, I am leaving it on there for now. With the skeletonized frame there is no issue with grip even though it is a smaller knife. Crazy light. Even though it is smaller, Boker matched the blade length to almost the entire handle. Short fat blades have been an issue on a lot of these smaller knives in my search, when long and narrow is what I need for how I will use it. I need to filet pickles for my daughter and open mail/packaging, not slash car tires (perhaps it is this, and not the length for which the Chicago was named?). At least for this stage of my life, it really is a great all around knife. We will see how it holds up. The stonewashed skeletonized titanium appearance strikes me as passing for dress casual, not suit and tie. I really like it. For the right person it could be a suit and tie knife. But not sure for me. We'll see if the GBA fills that role. I see that Massdrop has a good price on the UTP carbon fiber and G-10 versions at the moment (not the titanium for some reason), so I will be talking to my wife to see if she needs Christmas presents for co-workers and might need to get another for myself. I have the ZT0350 that is in my rotation along with a Buck and soon the Benchmade North Fork. The Benchmade will be more of my getleman's knife to carry. My ZT is a liitle large and not carried often. My buck get the most used. I also have a Microtech OTF & CRKY M16 that is an Auto as well. Those stay in my vehicle for use when a larger knife is needed.

Amazon. New one will be here tomorrow. My world isn't ending, just disappointing when a $15 SRM 7010 (which I did not end up keeping, too big, just wanted to see something Sebenza 21ish for size) comes in perfect order (it really was nicely executed) and a $170 Benchmade does not arrive in the same condition. Grandfather and my uncles always had a Buck, Case or Barlow in their pocket. Don't think I have seen the North Fork yet. Looking at it online, little big for current needs, but I like the look. Forward jimping for detail work. Don't really need the recurve. Strikes me as a bit small for a hunting knife, as they say that is its intended use. About the size of the Valet. Huh. Will have to check it out next time I am at Cabelas or Sherpers. Kinda cool. Quoted:
The Inkosi is smaller than the 21 just FYI I had a small knife "collection" years ago. My grandfather got me started, just cheapo users mostly. Nicest thing I ever had in that collection was a Victorinox locking/folding hunter given to me by some German friends when I was visiting. Maybe a few other Victorinox too. Nothing really nice. Number of years ago I gave all but five of my knives to my FIL and BIL. Should have kept that folding hunter though...Might pick up a smaller Victorinox slip joint just for the memories. I will never get anything back from my FIL or BIL. Then most recently (last couple years) some Microtechs as laid out in the OP, but those were a big jump. Anyways, that is where I am coming from. I can appreciate the nicer ones, but not ready to drop $375 yet. (I also appreciate seeing the dirt on your CRKs in the porn thread.) I've learned a lot and through this process have really been able to focus in on what I am using it for and identify the different knives and features that would allow me to do those things better. Been fun and will probably be an ongoing process. It is intriguing that they decided to beef up the Small Inkosi so much. Thicker blade than the 21 and heavier even though it is smaller. Do they really think people will abuse their little Inkosi that much... |

What's your opinion of the Air now that you have it?
I hadn't realized the mini trapper was so mini... |
|
Sorry to hear about the two duds on the Valet.
Since you got it. How is the Air? |
|
The Air is a bit of a pig
The UTP is really small. Overall it is still smaller all around than the Air and weighs in in at 1.1 oz, .2 oz less than the Air. I do like the UTP. Despite being small, still a good usable blade length. I will likely still end up with a Valet at some point here, just not a priority after the two bad ones. even tried to do some adjusting, just would not work. Still planning on a 531 when I get my discount for REI before the holidays. 940-1...well, we'll see how the Valet situation goes. The Air is pretty sweet. Glad I finally just ordered it. It looks very refined and feels great in the hand. Really like the texture on the scales. Positive traction but not too aggressive. Opening it the action is butter smooth. Tight lock up, zero slop. The lock bar lines up perfectly with the blade. Love the ground appearance of the blade and the thin flat grind wharncliffe. Easy one handed operation opening and closing. Blade is perfectly centered closed. Great size and weight, and my car doors will appreciate there is no pocket clip. While it is very light, it feels well built. Super sharp right out of the box. It's a beaut! But you guys already know all this As I am looking at it the only thing I am left wondering is whether I will miss not having a bit of belly when I am cutting food. I have other wharncliffes, but none I have EDCed. Time will tell. |

Novel design. Bit short though. One thing I learned quickly is that while I want small for in the pocket, I still want as much blade length as I can get for working with food. When you have a kid, you are always cutting everything. I sent the Chicago back because it was short and fat. Short and narrow like the Nymph may be better. Have a Launch 4 on the way. Knowing Kershaw, I am guessing I will keep it as a fun, quality piece, but anticipate it will not enter rotation often due to the short, Cali legal, blade length. That little bit extra going up to a 2.3-3" blade seems to help. Stupid California (and Chicago). Time and use will tell... |

Just for fun. They probably won't be regular appearances in the carry rotation.
Attached File Attached File The Kershaw OD2 is a nice size, has a lot going for it. Feels like cheaper materials (expected for the price). But I liked the novelty of the flipper. Kind of a ratchet lever that disappears into the back of the handle when it is open. I like that I can choke up on the blade. All my other flippers stick out when open and sometimes when I am using them I feel like my hand would be better placed if I was able to put my finger right where the flipper is and choke up on the blade. Not usually a big deal, but kinda nice on this one. The Boker Plus Mini Automat Kalashnikov...I knew it wasn't exactly what I was looking for, bit thick, but the other dimensions were so close to the Microtech UDT (which looks pretty ideal for my search by the numbers, if I could find one), so for $30, I figured, why not try it. Worst case I can give it to an in-law for Christmas. It's not a bad size. It is not overly refined, but it is OK. Reminds me of a Lightening knife in terms of fit and finish. Blade is good. Fires hard. Nice deep carry clip. Handle looks a bit cheapish. Button catches a little on the blade tang. Finger grooves appear to have been made for children's hands. They are not horribly uncomfortable, but they are no use either. Good jimping on the back. Not perfect, but for a user, it would work. And as a gift, the box it comes in is fun for presentation. Were I not looking for something a little nicer, little more refined looking, either might do a great job for EDC. Kinda disappointed the Launch 4 isn't here yet. Took a detour to Arizona for some reason. |

I love how off the rails this thread has gone. OP at the begining: I need a small simple knife OP now: So besides a 452 and about 5 other knives what else should I buy? I have found some great options though to fit the need outlined in the opening post, due entirely to the recs made in this thread by you guys. Thanks! As for the others, well, I said I gave away most of what I had that wasn't that great to start with, so why not? I didn't own any flippers before this endeavor and have enjoyed those, and as I searched I felt like I had missed out on some great designs of the last decade, so now I've got some options to rotate through regardless of what I am doing. Plus, depending on how i am carrying my gun and which one, I've learned some of the longer slimmer ones are still candidates for daily carry too. Quoted:
California doesn't have a legal blade length. Certain cities have their own ordinances on length though. I didn't research the laws, just came across those sections as I sought out the smaller knives. I don't pretend to know the laws in California or any where else. Interesting. So maybe when places are advertising their selection of "California legal," they are really just referring to knifes that should be legal anywhere in California in case you wander into a jurisdiction with blade length restrictions? I seem to recall reading or seeing that for the autos in particular in California, autos are illegal, unless the blades are less than 2" and then maybe it is fuzzy enough under the law? Hence the reason for all the sub 2" auto options? I didn't research the laws, just came across those sections as I sought out the smaller knives. The Emerson Kershaws aren't bad knives at all.
I had one I got off Amazon for about 30 bucks to try out the Wave opener. Stepped up to an Endura Wave a few months later. You definitely need a Waved knife if you don't have one. I'd say go for a Delica Wave as it's not too big and light to carry. The Endura is a big knife but it doesn't bother me at all other than taking up some real estate. It's incredibly light for the size. |

Been kinda eyeing the smaller Spydercos. Lock back still a deal breaker though. If there was a wave compression lock or liner lock variation from Spyderco, that might be a possibility.

Been kinda eyeing the smaller Spydercos. Lock back still a deal breaker though. If there was a wave compression lock or liner lock variation from Spyderco, that might be a possibility. View Quote I do wish Spyderco would offer a waved PM...that'd be about the bestest knife ever. |

Thanks for the recommendations. I m not really a knife snob (yet) and have yet to venture into the $100+ knives. I have a Kershaw OSO Sweet that is my daily beater knife and I recently purchased a OKC RAT II and a Byrd Cara Cara 2. I love the RAT II but i'm not thrilled with the Cara Cara 2. I should've spent a little more and got the Para 2. I'm quickly trending towards some higher end knives though. The Benchmade 940 series has my eye and I may cave soon. View Quote |

Sadly no. ZT did offer a waved model if you wanna try them. Southern Grind offers some too as well as the real Emersons. All of these run 200ish though. I do wish Spyderco would offer a waved PM...that'd be about the bestest knife ever. View Quote |
