The Mag-50 advert mentions a barrel length of 22". This compares with the "short-barrelled" military Browning HMG at 36" and the old "long-barrelled" gun with 45". With such a short barrel, there must surely be a huge fall-off in velocity (and a huge increase in in muzzle blast and flash), at least if standard military ammo is fired.

So what is the effect on velocity? Are special loads used in the rifles? Is it really sensible to combine such a big case with such a short barrel, or would a smaller-capacity case (like the shortened 12.7x76 for the Spotting Rifle) work just as well?

I don't know why it's not working, try doing a search for Lilja rifle barrels. From their homepage you should be able to find all the info.
