I have an AEM5 pending and am wanting to build a 204 ruger and have the barrel contoured for it. Anyone see any issues with this?

Also did I remember correctly getting AEM5 collars for a M4 barrel I need to contact Ron directly?

There's loads of interest now.

Look at the few of us who did mini recces with custom barrels.  We get hammered with questions because people want them.  They just don't want to go through the work required.

I think the problem is there are a bunch of different rail lengths, all requiring a different barrel length.

Carbine, midlength, and rifle length are the most common I guess. I don't think the Spike's setup will work with those though. You would need a ~8", ~10", or ~13.5" rail to use that.

I know it's been covered in the thread, but I'm getting confused (probably with the custom mods).

If I want to mount my AEM5 on the Ballistic Advantage 12.5" barrel, which collar do I need?
The M4?

Thanks

You will need a custom collar and remove the bayo lug if you are keeping the A2 front sight.

On my old 12.5 setup I was able to slightly shave the bayo lug and get the M4 collar to fit.

Kicking the idea around about possibly getting an AEM5 and building an upper to support it.  Called and spoke to Ron today.  Ya'll are right, very nice guy. Thanks for the phone chat.  If move forward with this now I have all the information I need.  All I really need is a barrel and I'm eyeballing the BA 16in .223 Wylde one that has the OPS12 profile on it.  The rest of the stuff required for a completed upper is already in my spare parts stash.

We also spoke briefly about the brake vs flash hider.  I was initially interested in using the Vortex instead of the typical single chamber brake. Ron advised that Smith made the tines too long and it will chew up the front baffle.  Spikes it appears offers an abbreviated version with shorter tines and I'm thinking that is one I'd most likely go with.

I can lose the bayo lug, no biggie.

Does it need a custom collar because the M4 AEM5 is too long or too short, or the ID is off?

Best to measure the barrel first to make sure the collar will match. There is not a standard "M4 profile"
That every barrel maker adheres to. If there was I could take Sundays off every week.

There is a standard (Colt/US Mil), but everyone else doesn't follow it.

But with diameter call outs of .75  and observed diameters between .745 and .732 I'm guessing their tolerance is +.000 -.020. Good for making barrels, bad for holding a collar concentric.

Thank you.

Ugh, I hate it when I strip a screw head.  It always ends up being a mess.  I tried to to use an ez-out and that didn't work.  I ended up drilling out the center of the screw, but even then it didn't want to budge.  So I use a press to press off the collar gouging the barrel.

Of course, once the collar was off the barrel, what was left of the screw easily unscrewed, providing absolutely no resistance.

Fortunately, the damage to the barrel was easily cleaned up with a buffing wheel, and when the barrel was installed on a new upper, the collar covered up the damage.

I took the BA+Model 12 back off a Larue UU and put it back together as a Mod H.

Would it be possible to run an AEM5 for 6.5 grendel? I know that the I.D. can be modified on the AEM5 for larger calibers, but it looks like one of the potential problems is that all the muzzle breaks I can find are .22cal

I would ideally like to stick with the AEM5 and not the AEM30 because of the size difference and also that the 30 just direct threads to the muzzle and I'd like to have a break/flash hider on the barrel.

There’s an AEM5-30 that mounts with a muzzle device, but it is longer than the AEM5.  I’ve heard Ron can bore a regular AEM5 out to .30 cal, but you would need to buy it like that, or submit another tax stamp for an existing one since it’s a change in caliber.  I’ve been thinking about a MK12 in 6.5 Grendel for a long time.

Ask Ron to make a custom aem5 bored for .264
If I were to buy a AE can, this is exactly what I’d do. Don’t want the even larger size/weight penalty of an AEM30 which is 4.5oz

My guess is order through an authorized dealer. Ron as a dealer list on his website.

I saw that Operation Parts has the brake, thread protector, crush washer, and collar as a package and are on Ron’s list of dealers. Price seemed pretty good as well.

I’d be interested to know where the bootlegs are being sourced from so I can avoid them. I’m guessing they’re causing baffle strikes or Ron is having to make a ton of custom collars?

They are by design hard on first baffles, but I have never had a fitment or quality related issue with the Vortex.

Ron, are these bootlegs Airsoft versions?  Just wondering. I know some airsoft gun clones of the MK12 pattern rifle exist so they are out there.

I would hope the Spikes HVS line of muzzle devices is good to go.  I'm considering an AEM5 but was wanting to possibly use their mini Vortex instead for the muzzle device. Supposedly Smith is the OEM who made them to Spikes specs.
https://www.spikestactical.com/collections/muzzle-devices/smith-vortex-h-v-s-for-spikes-can/

I'm seriously thinking of pulling the trigger and getting the ball rolling on an AEM5 soon.  Any good reason to spend a bit more for the knurled version or would the money be better spent on something else going for the plain version?  I'm really eyeballing the Ballistic Advantage .223 barrels with the ops profile already on it.  Still not sure if I'm going to do the 16 midlength or the 18 rifle gas ported one.  I have a 12 inch mlok rail already I can use with the 16 but if I wind up going with the 18 I'd like to know how much more rail real estate I can get away with before hitting the back of the can. When I spoke to Ron on the phone the other day I asked how far back the AEM5 reflexes over the barrel but I've since lost those damn notes I wrote down.  Anyone know? Not going for the typical MK12 clone look, kinda wanting to do my own thing by raiding some of the spare parts I already have on hand here.

There is no "M4" profile. Everyone makes them different, and the diameters can vary by .025 either way. Some have steps, some don't. Most places will not give
dimensions (they are a big secret) so in order to get a proper fit, I need to get barrel measurements on any barrel to make a fitting. Even Mk 12 barrels vary enough to cause
fitment issues. Sending me a link or a picture doesn't really help.
I know nothing about Spike's. Never seen any of his stuff in person.
How should I handle warranty (baffle strike) issues if you are using someone else's mount? Will they cover it if their mount has issues or was improperly installed?
Just something to consider.

That looks sweet. Let us know how it shoots.

Sidebar question for those that have mounted the AEM5 on a bolt gun - did you use a brake/collar setup or have the barrel cut to accept the can as a direct thread? I'm getting ready to pull the trigger on a switch-barrel setup and would like to have a .223 barrel cut for the AEM5, just trying to decide how to go about it. Barrel will be short and fat to start with, and I'm not too worried about weight as it will be bench/prone range toy in this config.

Thanks.

if its fat enough to turn a 20 taper into the barrel on a shoulder, go for it. otherwise collar it up.

im gonna do my howa one day. prolly gonna collar it, not a lot of meat for a shoulder. messure a used collar and see what the DIA is that the can hits, u need that dia at a minimum. ops collars are 1" dia BTW.

I’m looking to put something shorter on my mini recce so I can keep the AEM5 on my Mk12 full time. I’m all about the 1/1 can/gun ratio and these two are breaking it right meow. I like the size of the AEM2 but I worry how much suppression I’m going to lose with the significantly shorter can. But looking at something like an aem4 it doesn’t look like I’m going to save much in length so is it really worth it? What do you all suggest?

Also, do all the AE cans mount up the same way as the aem5? i.e. is the length from collar to brake the same 2.4" as the aem5?

Check the drawings on the AE website. The shorter AEM cans don't require as much length as the AEM5.
