Don't rule out an AK74 in 5.45X39. It's a flatter shooting round, with less recoil, and lighter wieght than the traditional 7.62X39 AK47.
For the most part Romanian is the way to go with those. And you can always get a thumbhole stock one (better quality sometimes than the SAR-2's), and then convert it to pistol grip with enough US parts.
Other than that in 7.62X39 the Bulgarian ones are great (a bit pricey), as are the Norincos. But they also come with thumbhole stocks. But again you can convert them.
The SAR-1's (Romanian) are generaly great for the money, and already have pistol grips. They are ugly, but they shoot great.
