I have a problem with my 700 Remington .308 win. My reloads have like black soot on the cases all the way to the headstamp and the bolt face. I'm going to try some new brass next, or some factory loaded ammo, but can anyone tell me what is happening? Could the chamber be dirty or does the ammo just not fit properly?

Your loads MIGHT be too light.

You need a certain amount of pressure to cause the brass case to expand in the chamber and seal it during powder combustion.  Otherwise, powder residue can blow back and coat the entire length of the cartridge with carbon.

Thank you 199. I never thought about that. They were rather light loads.
