Well what do ya think? (Carbine type weapon)

I posted something similar on thefiringline.com but i was just seeing what the ar enthusiests recomend. Got a lot of hits for an armalite, and a good amount for an m96.

Here is some of what i was considering:

Stoner sr-15 m4
Armalite m15a4 carbine
Rock River Arms LE tactical (post ban version)
M96 recon

What am i going to use it for. It will be a combat weapon. Will i ever use it for that? Probably not. But ya never know, i might re-enlist one day....sure...

Just a very reliable, accurate weapon. Reliability firsts, then accuracy.
Why so much money? I just want like the highest quality ar for that money, that is still a combat weapon. No racy guns.

Any other recomendation is great as well.
Thanks,
BB

Keep saving. A few grand more and you can purchase a full auto.

If it were me I would build three AR's.  Kits from Model 1 are $400.00 Oly receiver $100.00.
I would rather have three more guns any day.
Just my 2 cents.

I agree with JThompson, continue to save for the full auto.  You will never regret it.

My AR is a Rock River CAR15 Tactical Elite postban, if I remember it all correctly. I paid about $900 for it April of last year. 16" barrel, A2 style butt, M4 type handguard, a flat top with a rear sight mounted on it, and the Rock River 2-stage trigger.

I chose it first by trigger feel, and secondly based on the fact I KNEW I would want to scope it, but needed proper sights before the scope was purchased.

Only a few hundred rounds through it so far, but it works fine, prefers PMP commercial ammo so far.  I have used both 20 and 30 round GI magazines, and have had no issues of any sort with the 10 used GI magazines I purchased. Nice gun, seems very accurate with the iron sights.

Next will be a decent scope or red dot sight.  My eyes are getting too old for the shorter sight radius.

BTW, if I had it to do over, I'd do it again. Second choice would be a LAR/FAL in .308.

I think you should get an M1A maybe Springfield Armory's Scout Rifle.

You have good penetration and knock down power with these rifles.

[Just to be clear, the rifle pictured by Boston T., is the "SCOUT Squad." (There's also a just a "Scout" rifle.)]

This rifle is also on my short-list to acquire -number (2) on a list of dozens !
------------------------------------------------
I have an ArmaLite M15A4 which is real hard not to like.
I bought a Knight's short rail and pistol grip, a daylight visible 433nm Beamshot laser and I'm piddling around over which scope to get.
My Beta C drum looks pretty fine on this rifle also.
(Only on guns that I really like do I put accessories.)
------------------------------------------------
From a financial (investment) standpoint all recommending Class III are right - these guns increase in value faster than semi-autos.
------------------------------------------------
The Stoner SR-15 is mighty nice.  I just saw one sell for $1695.00 with RAIS, etc., so this gun may go over your top limit of $1500.

How about an SL8-1 and convert it to a G36 that takes AR mags?

I am thinking of doing that myself.

You could just get a Standard M1A

Here is a picture of one with a Black Synthetic Stock...

Or..if you like Pistol Grips...
McMillan Makes a Good Synthetic Stock for the M1A that has a Pistol Grip..

The ones you listed are .223 carbines.
The M1A is neither.

Check around for a Bushmaster pre-ban Dissipator.  It fills your requirements and is a little 'different' at the same time.

Or not.

Ditto! If you don't have an AR yet you should get one.... But an M1A Scout Squad is next on my list too.... I like the idea of a lighter weight M1A that is fast handling.... drop an Aimpoint on it and that will be a powerful package.

I would shop around and get 2 diferent types of rifles. More to play with, even different calibers. Maybe an AR15 and a AK47 or FN FAL. Good luck with your dicsision.
