The recoil rod does stick out further than the mag cap.  The C&H model looks like a regular mag cap with an approx. .5" rod coming out about 3" from the cap.  Whether or not the recoil rod is worth the money is pretty subjective.  If you like the way the gun points/swings already, leave it alone.  For me, the AL391 was a little light in the muzzle and did not move well; the mercury recoil rod added weight and as a bonus reduces felt recoil.
