The marlin vs win is a timeless campfire argument. You really just need to pick the one you like better.
As for the 30-30 for hd. It will work. I think speer makes 125gr jhp that hold together at 2500fps. For hunting I typically prefer 170gr RN but for hd the lighter jhp are probably better. Barnes makes a nasty 150gr hp. Here's a pic of the bullet  Attached File |

Low capacity and as slow to reload as a shotgun, I would rather use a shotgun. Both being fairly equal, the shotgun will stop a fight faster.

There aren't many levers that can shoot buck, though. Truth be told, shotgun, lever, or otherwise, there are a ton of tools that can handle the task. There are also some designs with a great deal of advantages. You never know when an edge will be needed. |

If one is going to place limitations on themselves and their situation, this ^ is far more sensible than a lever action. Also, .30-30 a "thumper".
