That sucks about your AR70 kits

Still waiting on a viable receiver and barrel. There's a guy making 80% receivers, rails and rear mounts. Get on his list. First run of 100 are spoken for. Message me and I can give you his info. Looks to be around 350-375$

Few builds on weaponsguild. I'm still waiting on my 80% receiver to be ready. Barrels will be around in a month or two. Mark Serbu listed one of his AR70/90 barrels on GB. $$$

[#6]
Finally got my 80% receiver.  It's truly a work of art. Along with the receiver shell the kit came with rails, rear trunnion, front trunnion tabs and 4-5 ejector rivets.

First I started with the rails. Already knew they would be warped.  I hit all edges with a red brillo pad in a dotco to smooth them up. Next I straightened the rails. Did this by placing them between 2 aluminum blocks and tapping them with a soft hammer until they were straight.

Link Posted: 3/7/2021 9:44:50 PM EDT
[#7]
Next I moved on to the trunnion tabs. The old torched tabs need to be ground flat, the new tabs needed to be trimmed a bit and I beveled the edged that needed welded.

Next I mounted the trunnion in a jig I got from a member on weaponsguild.  Worked perfect.

Welded the tabs with a MIG (really need to use a TIG) but I'm happy and confident with the results.

Mounted on the lower. Cleaned up with the dotco.

Also forgot to add that I ground off the auto sear trip on the carrier before I started.

Link Posted: 3/7/2021 9:50:19 PM EDT
[#8]
Next I riveted and welded on the ejector.

Next I put both trunnions on the lower and fit and welded up the rails. This took a while and was fairly frustrating.  But it's smooth and no binding.  The carrier was rubbing the ejector and both needed to be relieved. (Don't mind the un cleaned up welds)

Link Posted: 3/7/2021 9:57:44 PM EDT
[#9]
Cut out the ejection port and charging handle slot.  They are marked and pretty self explanatory.

Next I put the trunnions and rails on the lower and slid on the receiver shell and welded it all up.  The weldes will eventually be cleaned up some and sand blasted and blued.

Welded on the dust cover and then the rear sight.  Also drilled the front takedown pin hole.

Here's where it sits now. Still need to mod the FCG, get barrel and refinish everything. Pretty happy do far. And it will strip a round out of a magazine perfectly.

Had to move the rear sight back roughly 1/16" because the B&T picatinny rail wouldn't fit.   Then cleaned up the welds, sand blasted and cold blued.

Oiled after bluing.

Complete upper receiver.  Rear sight, dust cover slide and take down pin retaining clip installed.

Next I'll finish neutering the FCG and refinish the lower.

Any word on barrels?

And gunsmiths that are going to complete the kits for those of us that dont have the shop/skills?

There was some on GB but I think they might have dried up. I think there may have been roughly ~1000 kits imported.

Nothing set in stone yet on barrels. And I dunno of anyone that will be building these. I would but I don't have a FFL.

Here's my take on the semi auto conversion for the Beretta AR70/90.

First pull all the FCG parts out of the lower.  I started with the burst pack. Remove all the trips and levers out.  I drilled and removed the little L piece in the back that holds one of the trips. Also note it's soldered on too.

Next I drilled plug weld holes on both sides of the lower.

Then plug welded in the burst box.  It is needed because it holds the hammer spring and guide rod.

Link Posted: 3/14/2021 10:23:19 PM EDT
[#19]
Next I cut down the auto sear/trip.

I used it to make a trigger spacer / sear denial.  With the trigger pin in place I welded in the spacer.

Next I ground off the area on the hammer that catches the sear.

Followed by cutting the tail off the disconnector.

Last I welded up the underside of the selector do that it will only go in Safe and 1 (semi)

Link Posted: 3/14/2021 10:24:59 PM EDT
[#20]
Lastly I sand blasted the lower and trigger guard. Heres my sweet redneck blasting cabinet.

Here's all the bits that you no longer need for the lower.

All cold blued and assembled. Notice the factory welds won't take cold blue. I might have it cerakoted one day.  I will also do some color fill.

So the 70/90 is the updated version that takes AR mags?

Pretty much.

It's weirder than that; it's like they redesigned the same AR70 gun from scratch, so nothing from the older gun is compatible, lol.

It’s retarded, all they needed to do was make the lower take AR mags and reverse the selector to a conventional safe/fire configuration.

Believe it or not, some parts do indeed interchange. The barrel forward of the bipod is basically the same. They added a gas regulator on the gas block, but it’ll slide on an AR-70. Seems to fit like it should. The muzzle device will thread on and is otherwise similar. I think they basically left the front end alone except a couple mods-such as the barrel nut setup.

They redesigned the receiver because apparently the older design would overheat too easily in military usage. Either way, I like the “get them both” approach!

I wonder if Troy would be able to make a stretched version of his receiver so we could make homebrew 751's on printed lowers?

I recently got the chance to borrow an original SC70/90 stock in the hopes I can duplicate them. Plan is to find a place that can cast them out of aluminum and eventually offer them for sale.

First things first. It's just the stripped stock. No mounting block or buttpad. Sucks but I'm beyond excited to have a real stock in my hands for a period of time.  Heres the original stock below my home made aluminum stock. Not bad for home made cast aluminum.

Next I ordered supplies. Got polyurethane rubber to make the mold and epoxy resin from polytek.  Plan is to make a few epoxy resin casts so I can send the original ( and rare and expensive) stock back to the owner.

I made the mold box out of plexiglass.

Planned on making a 2 piece mold, so I built up 1/2 of the box with Styrofoam and clay.

Sprayed everything with release, mixed up the polyurethane rubber and poured it in. (Sticky mess lol)

16hrs later I removed the first half of the mold, removed the clay and Styrofoam and placed the first 1/2 of the mold I'm the box.

Stock in the first 1/2.  Applied more release.

Mixed up the epoxy (accidentally did 5x too much) and poured it the mold. First the first pour I'm happy with it. After it fully hardens and I clean up all the flashing I think it will turn out pretty good.

What do you think? Would there be any interest in aluminum stocks? Epoxy resin stocks?

I need to look into making a vacuum chamber to remove all the air bubbles.  Going to take the resin copy to some shops around here and see if I can have some cast.  Also looking into making wax & clay molds and casting my own aluminum stocks. I'd like to get dimensions for the mounting block and pivot pin. Most likely going to make my own.  Also thought about making epoxy stocks that you can screw your own mounting blocks too.

That's an impressive cast, particularly the aluminum one.  Coke cans or?  I've cast an epoxy lower & reinforced it w/ a thumbhole stock; I don't know that your epoxy stock will hold up for very long unless you run, say, a coat hanger through it or add fiberglass strands in your epoxy mix.

Thx. Melted a solid bar of aluminum I got from a hardware store.

The epoxy stocks are more of a way for me to have a hard copy of the stock so I can send the original back to the owner (that way I'm not liable for an incredibly rare and expensive stock). I doubt they would hold up to long term use, especially in the original function. I am looking at aluminum infused epoxy that's used for tool making but it's super expensive.

Chopped fiber reinforcement may be an option, if you can injection mold it (hand pump injection setups are cheaper than you may expect)

Picked up a barrel that was made from a AR15 bull barrel. Shoots good,  think ill need to open up the gas port a tad.  Original owner said if was .059-.060", it was reliable with brass 5.56 but wouldn't reliably lock open on a empty mag with tulammo.

Found a seller in Slovenia that had some AR70/90 combo tools and SC70/90 slings.

Tool has a chamber brush, front and rear sight tools and extractor removal tool.

The sling is the SC70/90 version with the 2 clips instead of 1 clip and 1 flat clip for the AR70/90 stock.

Packaging and tool pictures

Extractor removal/install tool

Gor extractor removal, the post with the Wedge is forced between the extractor and its detent, the claw pulls the extractor out

Bolt, extractor, detent and tool

For installation the claw holds the detent down so you can slide in the extractor

Stuck case removal tool

Chamber brush

Takedown pin punch
