Also: this article lays out the "pressure difference" myth and slays it handily...then the author proceeds to act as though he hadn't. (/sigh) He basically shows that for almost all practical intents and purposes, .308 Win and 7.62 NATO are the same cartridge. Then he ignores that and says he'll never use 7.62 in a .308-stamped gun, and only use .308 in a 7.62-marked gun under very specific circumstances. He did all the work to disprove the common myth...then believes it anyway. |

I don't know why guys stick to their antiquated and wrong info. Just because a case might be thicker, and some throats are longer, and they might headspace differently.. does not turn it into something different.

The difference is the same as 32*f and 0*c.
You will not find one actual event that a .308 blew up a 7.62 rifle because they are the same round labeled differently and can be reloaded the same. The same case with the same powder weight and the same primer= the same round. As with any ammo, some rounds are hotter than others and a .308 will SOMETIMES be hotter than a 7.62 but not anywhere close to enough to blow up a barrel built for 7.62. |

The note about reducing the powder charge when using 7.62 NATO (LC, FC, etc...) cases is definitely valid. Less case volume= greater pressure with an equal powder charge. This could very well lead to problems. Other than that, they are interchangeable. |

(if your talking 308 vs 7.62 cant tell in your post) The 7.62 case has less internal volume, and if loaded the same as the 308 then it could/will cause problems. This is more of a reloading problem than being "10k pressure difference" between the rounds myth problem. Every reloading manual I've seen gives this as a warning in the 308 section or has a separate 7.62/308 reloading page. |

He is correct in the if you shoot a 308 in a worn out 7.62 it could be bad, but nearly all the current chambers for 308 are not cut the same as a 7.62 nato weapon, and his comparison is false. Remember the 308 ARs don't have a milspec and are not held to anything. If he thinks that manfs are pumping out "true" 7.62 chambers he is mistaken, and blindly saying not to use 308 in a 7.62 is kinda . I would bet most are done with 308 reamers with larger throats (speculation)I will say if you absolutely want to be sure, get it headspaced. |

let me ask it like this then....i am buying an armalite ar10 a4 and barrel is stamped 7.62 x 51 nato. Can i shoot the .308 ammo or stick with ammo labeled as barrel is? THANKS

THANKS Been shooting both in AR10s for about 12-14 years. I only shoot 7.62 NATO in my Ishapore 2A because it passes a NATO gauge set but fails SAAMI but it is military surplus with a NATO chamber. It was the same with my M14S. It was passing a NATO gauge for a long time while failing SAAMI, but once it failed the NATO gauge, I sent it off to Warbirds. I just got it back and the headspace is now 1.632, so I am good to go with either.
