Just finished building my new backstop for my shooting range. At present I can shoot from 0 -500ft. Once the corn fields are picked I could technically shoot double that. I purchased used railroad ties from Menards as I was unable to find any for free. They had them on sale for $6 each. I built it in a I_I  shape with the side arms interlocking with the back wall. The back wall is approx. 17 ft wide as each railroad tie is 8 ft 6 inches long. The ties are 9" wide and on average 7" thick. My back wall when finished is 7 ft hight, and two rails wide. In every two layers we drilled 0.5 inch holes and inserted 1 ft pieces of rebar. Every three layers high, we pinned the corner joints with rebar also. The back wall is also support by 4 pieces of 4x4 posts 10 ft high, set in a 3ft deep hole that was filled with 40# bags dry concrete mix and just dumped water into it in the hole. Filled hole up with dirt and tamped with spud bar for a solid fill. I let the 4x4 post and concrete setup for 24 hours and then we started building. The outer arms of the "U" are 8 ft long and trimmd for looks with a chainsaw. The only regret I have is that I ordered way too much sand. I called the sand pit and told them how many cubit yards I wanted to fill and they endd up sending me 26.50 tons! WAY too much sand. But it will settel out over time, and I've told me friends if they need sand come and get some.
Anyway, its done, and I dont think any round will make it through 8 ft thick sand!  I've attached some picture to show you my process.
The next step is getting my steel targets and paper target holders installed! (AND GETTING RID OF EXCESS SAND!)

My Oak woods. Thick! Plus I live on top of a hill and there are no houses within miles in cases a bullet manages to totally miss and is able to jig zag through the forest and exit 100 yards on the other side.
Also, I do not allow just anyone to use it. I was taught proper gun handling as a nine year old and I expect others to follow safety rules also.

Good looking crosstie construction. As a landscape contractor I bought those by the thousands for retaining walls and tree wells.

The sand looks like its deep enough to never see a round hit the ties.  We used to have to carry those ties from the street to the rear of the lot,no room for a bobcat. They are heavy as hell, which help lead to my retirement...

Yes they are- about 150# each. that why they make machines. Thank God for my neighbor who is a contractor that let me borrow his bobcat!

Have I ever mentioned how much I hate those with enough land to have their own range on their own property?

Yes, I'm glad I purchased property. They don't make land anymore. I can't imagine having to live in a city let alone not not being able to go out in my own yard and shoot groundhogs, deer, etc.For you city dwelllers- there really are stars in the sky(It's pitch black at night where I live)- I can see them all on a couldless night. And just going outside to pee and not getting arrested is indeed a pleeasure you can't put a price on

You'll still crater the front and skip rounds over the top.
