IIRC, the original Thompson's fire from an open bolt which is a big no-no with the ATF even if semi-auto. Due to that issue, I don't think they've been popular to build up from kits

All but the M1A1 fire from closed bolt, AFAIK.

The 1921 is the civilian gun, open bolt, vertical foregrip. The 1928A1 is the military gun with cutts compensator, finned barrel, horizontal forend, Blish system, floating firing pin, top cocking knob, two types of sights (lyman adjustable and non-adjustable) firing from open bolt. M1 eliminated the finned barrel, cutts compensator, Blish system, moved cocking handle to side, fires from open bolt. M1A1 eliminated floating firing pin, pin is part of bolt like STEn and M3.
