Hi there,

I play a game called Forgotten Hope, which is sort of an online WW2 simulator populated by a lot of history geeks (link at http://forgottenhope.bf1942files.com)

The nice people in this forum have been kind enough in the past to clear up a lot of questions for us about various weapons in the past, and I was hoping I might draw on your expertise again. We are having a discussion about what sort of weapon the guy on the right is holding:

A lot of people have been claiming it's a captured WWI-era Gewehr 98 with a trench magazine (I believe they were manufactured until 1935 or so), but aside from a picture an other user posted (below), I can't find any references to G98s with the grooved stocks.

Could someone give me some more insight into this?

Thanks!
