Well I bought an M1 Garand. Played Call of duty 1&2, played Medal of Honor Allied Assault, and bought and watched Band Of Brothers.
I am on a little bit of a WWII kick.  Anyway. My baby: Winchester receiver, serial number returns that it was made in October of 1943. All other parts are SA except the barrel which is brand new Arlington Ordinance.  And I of course have a couple 1911's I also have an Enfield 303, and a 1917. So I want more WWII guns. Particularly the following, in order of importance/want. M1 Carbine K-98 1903 Springfield Mosin Nagant What things should I know to look for when looking to buy these rifles? What prices should I look for? Things to stay away from? Thanks |

Yes, a Thompson is on my list. But dang they are pricey. They are on my.....impulse buy if I find a good deal list.

On the Mosin's, if you want one that is a little different find an "MO" marked one or a "DDR" marked one. The hex recievers bring a little more than the more common round recievers as well. If you have a C&R FFL, you can usually have places like AIM, SOG, etc. hand pick a year for you. I prefer the pre-war M/N's as the triggers are a little better than wartime production.
Unfortunately, the rest of the rifles on your list have seen prices really soar in the past 5-6 years. The K-98's were'nt too bad when the Russian captures came out, but even those are drying up now, and command quite a bit more. Look for all matching rifles. Don't know enough about the others to offer advice on their purchase. As for modern repros, Kahr makes a nice Thompson repro, and Valkyrie Arms makes a pretty nice M3 Grease gun and sTEN (or they did, don't know if they are still in production). |

Don't forget the'03's..The CMP has them as well as M1's But I would use caution here, Alot of the '03's the CMP has are well worn, I saw what they had at the north store all through last summer and fall. I was lucky..working in the area I was able to look them over real well, and managed to come away with a couple of winners, (a nice'03 and a real nice'03A3) the bores on both gage just about new, But, the '03A3's are sold out. There are still alot of '03 left at the North store, but I would'nt buy one sight unseen. If you could get to the North store you could probably find a nice one, That's the only way I'd buy one from the CMP.. For $400 it's still the best deal going.

Nice! I just gave my "WW2" collection a good jumpstart last week:
 my M1 is a postwar springfield made in around 1953. I havent looked up the carbine yet. |

The usual things to look for in any used gun will serve you well, IMO. Rusted out bore, slop in the bolt/trigger, missing parts, unusually high price, etc. etc.
Carbines & '03s are in the $450 & up range, these days. So far, I have a Garand & Carbine, two Lugers & a modern 1911 mil spec. I lust for the '03s but can't bring myself to pay $450 for a 5 shot rifle!

hate him it's easier. i used to have an isapshore enfield. that was my only ww2 type firearm.

Don't forget to get a Ohio Ordnance BAR M1918A3! It complements my M1 Garand and my Smith Corona M1903A3 quite nicely!
They are pricey but they are worth the wait and are quite the attention getters on the range.

Yep, it is. You can tell by the "ears" on the receiver. I need more C&Rs. In fact, I (very sadly) have to sell a Polytech Pre-ban for rent money, but I don't need everything in money, so I'm hoping to console myself this weekend at the show with part cash and part trade, and my wish list is plenty long. I could use another M1, or a Carbine, or....well, you get the idea.

are the actions on the 1917 enfields as smooth as they are on the british and indian manufactured ones? if so i definitely need one of those. and .30-06 is cheaper than .303brit.

It sure is, Its made by eddystone, the barrel has a date of i believe 11-17, it also has a 4 digit serial number McM

Arlington Ordnance is not a barrel maker. They were the importer of M1's from Korea back in the late 1980's early 1990's. |
