Try the blue can of easy off oven cleaner and then soak it in hot bleach water for awhile. That seems to be a favorite around here.

Sometimes setting your oven to warmer mode or what not does the trick.

I'll give that a try... it is nasty stuff... While doing this I did also figure out that the buttplate screw holes were rotted through... so I need to drill them out and then refill them.

Yeah, I have 2 Yugo mausers I got for $70 a peice.
Just do what I did...call Boyds and get a new sporter stock. :P |

Use striaght 'orderless mineral sprits" on the metal pats, soaking them over night.
Use a half tung oil half orderless mineral sprits on the wood with a rag, Always comes clean with out smelling up the wifes stove or doing any scrubbing. just let it soak. The wood gets cleaned and the tung oil leaves a nice finish. |

For the metal parts I've used a $30 steamer I bought at Fred Meyer. Works great for blasting out the cosmo in the front sight cracks, etc.

Get a steamer, and it will melt right off. Just did a M1 Garand last week. Did the wood, and all the metal. Came out perfect!!! You will not be sorry.

Anyone got a recomendation on a good cheap steamer? It is hard to tell on amazon which ones won't suck.
... I may try the oven method. As an update I managed to finally get the stock to stop oozing cosmoline and it is now hanging in my shower waiting for the stain to dry.-C4- |

I've done a bunch of stocks. Tall container full of hot, hot water and tide detergent. Put stock in let bubble for 30 minutes or so. All grease gone and dings filled.

From what I have been told any detergent that is actually soap will work. It works very good, the stuff actually bubbles like a science project. Plus the hot water expands all the dings. |

If you use this method, be sure to wash your hands REALLY good afterwards. I did and apparently I didn't. Now I have a nice rash where I wish I didn't have a rash.  It did a supurb job of cleaning up CMP Greek 03 stocks tho.

I have used Oxyclean to good effect.
Mix the hottest water you got with a generous portion of Oxyclean in your bathtub, the submerge the stock. It will foam up like peroxide on a cut. Lightens up or removes most discoloration. |
